A Picture Worth a Thousand Words
This is the sad reality for so many dogs in Asia….
We have been told countless times that dogs slaughtered for meat are ‘different’ to pet dogs… That they are less worthy and that it is their “destiny” to be slaughtered. But we have met these dogs. We have looked them in the eyes and we see their soul and, more poignantly, we see their fear. Despite their treatment and the utter betrayal, many dogs in markets come to the bars – head bowed, tail wagging submissively – their craving for human touch, for reprieve, is overwhelming.
The dog meat trade is one of the most serious animal welfare issues in Asia. The availability of dog meat is widespread in Asia, where the welfare concern is enormous due to the large numbers of dogs being stolen from owners, taken from the streets or sourced from farms, transported long distances and inhumanely slaughtered.
The conditions under which dogs are farmed, transported, and slaughtered are inhumane and barbaric. The dogs are not humanely killed, many are tortured for hours before being skinned alive. The reason for this is that people believe that the pain inflicted leads to the tenderizing of the meat. Most shocking of all, is that some dogs are still alive when their fur is removed.
This violent and crime-ridden trade continues all year round and it saddened me. Dogs are Man's best friend and must be treated with love. Animal cruelty or dog meat trade must stop.
