Declare extinct the blue macaw that inspired the film Rio
In Brazil, the hope of the Rio blue macaw came to an end. No new Spix macaws will be born in freedom. The arara spix, better known as blue macaw, was portrayed in the film Rio with the character of the domestic bird Blu. The people who accompanied Blu on his trip to find Jewl, the last female of his species, will no longer see blue macaws in his natural habitat. The happy ending of the film, which augured the continuity of the species, is far from reality.
A study on endangered species, conducted by the organization Birdlife International, determined that the species of blue macaw would have become extinct from nature. According to the organization, some birds of that species survive in captivity. The blue macaw, a species that only lives in Brazil, would be one of the eight birds that would have become extinct.
