Ancient Ireland's Success with Free Market & Stateless Society

in #anarchism8 years ago

From the words of Murray Rothbard, this short vid explores some of the elements of Ancient Irish law and society in their relation to the free market and a stateless society.

While many authors have been prone to romanticize the past when speaking of the old Emerald Isle, we are certainly not dealing with a Utopia here, but rather, and in the very least, we are dealing with an historical example of a system that contained working free-market, decentralized, and stateless customs and institutions, and in this regard it is at least worthy of our attention.

It's important to bear in mind, and I'm prone to point it out, the words 'anarchy', 'statelessness', 'liberal', 'socialist', 'capitalist' etc., common to modern political discourse, were unknown to the ancient Irish, in this sense the concepts as we know them did not exist, but we can, with the advantage of historical hindsight, observe and analyse this system for principles and ideas that could address modern problems.

Rothbard, David Friedman, and Gerard Casey all realised the value of the early Irish system in the course of their work; it is, however, an incomplete study, but it's also a conversation that's fun to have. I've dedicated six years of my life to researching and speaking about this topic, looking for ways to relate it back to our current condition and hoping to inspire Irish people to reconnect with their rich, powerful and ancient roots.
