Respect Tradition as Long as It Supports Your Thought Independence...

Hello, dear Steemians!

Tradition is an important and undeniable part of our human society. Cultures hold their values together by the glue of tradition and work their way to preserve such values with the utmost respect and devotion.

But young people and newer generations often find it difficult to respect some of our oldest traditional standpoints and often act rebellious in face of tradition.

How much respect do we owe tradition?

If you respect tradition, you will be highly venerated in your own society. People see themselves as heir to the legacy of rich traditions, especially old people who would go to great lengths to preserve these traditions.

But if you have ever wondered if you should respect tradition, then you need to understand one truth: Tradition should be respected, so long as it supports your independence of thought and common sense.

Some traditions essentially do not make any sense, and it is pointless to give them an amount of respect that they simply do not deserve, for the mere sake of being tradition.

Because traditions themselves should not be of any value. What should matter is the value of the work itself, and not the tradition. I will make my point by telling you a story.

There was once a king who lived in a great castle. The castle had a courtyard guarded by many watchmen day and night. One day, he was taking a walk in the courtyard when he saw a watchman standing guard near a bench.

The king thought to himself. Every guard in the courtyard had a purpose for being there.

For example, two guards stood near the gates, and two guards stood near the doors of the palace. Another guard followed the king wherever he went.

So, he wondered, ‘What is the purpose of the guard standing next to the bench?’

The commander of the watchmen was brought before the king to answer the question.

He did not know why. He told the king that in the last 30 years, there has always been a guard standing near that bench.

They went to the previous commander and asked him why there was a guard near the bench. The commander thought for a moment, then recalled a memory from the olden days.

‘Your father had ordered the castle to be painted, my king.’ The commander said, ‘And you were just a child then, and used to play in the courtyard. So, for two days, we positioned a guard there to stop you from sitting on the chair and get yourself dirty with paint.’

The moral point of that story is basically some of the things that we do because people that came before us used to do them, but we do not have any reasonable explanation for doing them.

Tradition is a powerful aspect of culture, but it should not be exploited to the point of utter lunacy and ridicule.

It is not just about traditions. Take a look at everything you feel compelled to do because the people that came before you used to do them. Is that a reasonable justification for you to do things that you may not want to do?

Think about your predispositions and your commitment to tradition.

Often enough, we find that we have pointlessly bound our life by things that do not really matter.

A BIG HUG!

I agree with this

Tradition should be respected, so long as it supports your independence of thought and common sense.

And even when it comes to our independent thought we have to be fully aware of the fact that we function within a society that has become more global and interconnected. Sometimes what we take as "independent thought" may collide with societal norms, in which case we have to evaluate if it makes sense to hold a thought or tradition that creates conflict (especially in the case of family traditions).

The story of the king reminded me of a certain dish that my great grand mother used to prepare and she did it separating the mix in two pots. When asked why, she'd only say that that's how she learned to do it. Eventually it was discovered that the reason was because it was a big family back in the days and one pot was not enough. And yet she kept doing it in two pots even though the mix was small and was meant for just a few people.

I think that the obssessive respect some people have for the past or the elders must always be balanced against the pros and cons of perpetuating traditions just because we are said so.

In some countries, for instance people stone women to death for the stupidest reasons or gang-rape them or mutilate them just because that is the "traditional" punishment.

This are some of those instances where common sense was just thrown out of the window.

Like laws, traditions may be just(tifiable) and unjust(tifiable) and we should be reasonable enough to choose when to abide either.

Totally according to your view. We must abhor traditions that attempt against gender and human dignity.

Ciertamente no podemos ser indiferentes bajo ningún concepto sobre estos actos de lesa humanidad @yaleal.....

Traditions connect us to our society, families and culture. Tradition gives us identity. As long as these traditions give us joy, pride and sustain some worthy cultural value, it is important to respect them.

Regards

It is necessary to respect tradition because there is a a reason behind everything. So respect everything what ever belongs to history.

Definitely we should respect traditions but unfortunately in these days our focus only on new development and we are destroying traditions. Thanks @chbartist for this lovely post and I also want to become part of your community please help

@chbartist however their are some technological changes have been made,
but we must respect our traditions because it is the tradition which gives us a identity.

There are traditions, which sometimes generate stress but for the simple act of respect we force ourselves to continue. :(

I think tradition and culture are part of life and we should carry forward with us to the next generation. Traditions are to celebrate the time with people. But but traditions and culture should not be force on us. Whoever wants to the part of it then okay and start following it but who doesn't want to be part of it, it shouldn't be the case when people are forcing him to follow. Thanks friend @chbartist for writing nice post. Have a great weekend.

I love the perspective that story gives, thank you for sharing. It can be so easy to limit our own growth based on previous traditions that we keep. Fantastic post as per usual! Positive thoughts for a great day!

very interesting and instructive block, you certainly need a lot of work and effort to prepare something like that professionally ... thank you

@chbartist our tradition is our identity . Its present us front of whole world . If it will affect to peoples they will follow and respect to and we like any other country tradition then we will try to follow because its vice-versa . so give respect and take respect .
THANKS!
