Talking about a challenge related to agriculture is a very fun thing. However, before continuing I tried to invite @f2i5, @walictd and @vivigibelis to participate in the challenge "SEC S20W1: Impact of Climate Change on Agriculture".

Describe in detail how agricultural productivity is affected by climate change.

Many things that affect agricultural production are caused by climate influences:

Temperature conditions : When we talk about temperature, of course we have to look at the extent to which temperature has an influence on increasing agricultural productivity, which farmers must pay attention to. If we don't pay attention to the weather or temperature, this will lead us to failure, especially reduced harvest yields.

Moreover, the weather conditions are very hot which makes the soil not damp or wet, which of course has an impact on production. Another thing that will happen is the opposite, if the temperature is too cold it will also have an impact on production which will of course be detrimental to farmers.

Water availability : This will also have an impact on the world of agriculture, especially since the plants we plant require a lot of water which will affect soil moisture levels. Which will ultimately result in crop failure or reduced production yields. That way, we have to pay attention to the availability of water when we plant plants. We have to look at the level of availability or level of water requirements for the plants we plant.

Land contour : The location of the land also has an effect on increasing agricultural yields. Which is also caused by the influence of rainfall. There is soil that absorbs and soil that does not absorb water. So the condition of the soil must be considered before we cultivate it into productive land.

Moreover, the contour of the land is not suitable for several types of plants, so we must pay as much attention as possible to the condition of the soil before we plant plants

Discuss how extreme rains and extreme droughts damage crops.

Extreme rains

Continuous rain is something that has an influence on agricultural yields, both during planting and harvest, even when crops are productive. This is something that farmers do not want. Because rain like this is something that has an influence on plant productivity. This is something that is of particular concern to farmers.

Extreme drought

Rain that doesn't fall will certainly make the soil dry. Extreme drought will of course prevent plants from growing well and will have an impact on productivity. In essence, this does have a very frightening specter for farmers. Because whatever plants are planted will not grow, even some types of plants grow but cannot produce.

Discuss in stages how new pests and diseases are emerging as a result of climate change AND what measures farmers can take to prevent them.

Plant pests appear when plants start to grow, this can happen when rain falls with high intensity. Usually rice plants are attacked by mice. And of course it's not just rice plants. Even for other plants, pest attacks on stems, roots and fruit can also occur as a result of high intensity rain. There are even certain types of pests that attack the leaves. Of course, this happens because of natural processes and there are even effects from actions taken by the farmers themselves.

Discuss what changes in irrigation systems are required due to climate change.

There are things that must be done so that irrigation can function properly when extreme weather occurs. Manage irrigation patterns as well as possible and of course ensure that there is sufficient water available for farmers. They even have to arrange ways so that when extreme weather does not disturb farmers. Both during extreme rain and extreme drought. Because these two things have a tremendous influence on the world of agriculture. Good drainage is another thing needed when extreme rain occurs, apart from ensuring the level of water availability. By not forgetting that water distribution is good for farmers.

Explain the two best ways to respond to climate change.

There are many things that can be done to improve agricultural productivity. The best things that we need to pay attention to when we want to increase agricultural production in the midst of extreme weather are:

  • Education :

Because education is really needed, agricultural production continues to increase. So it is necessary to provide agriculture starting from school age children so that they are able to manage agriculture well when they are in society. Education is not only for children, but it is the beginning that will have an influence on the future.

Apart from that, education must also be given to farmers, so that they are able to do what they want to achieve. Good education will make them more active and of course will increase agricultural yields.

  • Sustainable agriculture :

By carrying out sustainable agriculture, agricultural yields will continue to increase. In this case, of course we can take advantage of extreme weather to increase agricultural yields. Including good irrigation patterns and of course planting patterns must also follow changes. There is diversification of agricultural crops and planting of climate change resistant crops. So paying attention to this will increase productivity which will ultimately reduce poverty. Because of the influence of education that has been given to them which makes them aware of the importance of education in the agricultural sector.
