As you sluggishly turn your smitten back
On a journey into grey history.
2017, year of the good bad and worse, you won't be quickly forgotten.
You appeared in January like the sun after a rainy day,
With promises of days, weeks and months brighter than sunshine.
In March we beheld your protruding belly,
Our joy knew no limit.
Perhaps you will deliver a better economy,
Perhaps ethnic and religious violence will be a thing of the past,
Perhaps the Naira will wake from a deadly slumber,
Perhaps there will be more jobs for the youths,
Perhaps our leaders will become wiser.
Low and behold, there came your baby in September.
Perhaps a still born would have been better?
It should of course have been a child of fulfilled promises,
Yet it was an ugly child looking like promises unfulfilled.
The economy is still bad,
Ethnic and religious violence still thriving where the Naira has refused to thrive!
The price of petrol surged into the sky like a bat out of hell,
The festive period should have been a time to celebrate, not to queue for fuel and lament the state of a nation blessed by God but cursed by poor leadership.
2017 it's time to say good bye,
You are banished to grey history!
