Manufacturing resilience in Eastern Zone of Nigeria
Private entrepreneurs in the South Eastern States of Nigeria today have demonstrated their determination to heighten the economic progress of the South Eastern Region. Here, Anambra State tops the scale in boosting the economy of the region through industrialization and agricultural development. Nnewi town which is situated at Anambra Southern district has been dubbed the ‘Japan of Africa, the indigenes who are industrialists ensures that the location of various industries in their homestead. They have moved from manufacturing of household item to automotive spare parts, wires / cables and food products.
Manufacturing in Nigeria have roots in Eastern region. Though there is harsh operating environment, the entrepreneurs have shown resilience or toughness in establishing and sustaining the automobile manufacturing facilities. These are a chain of entrepreneurs in Nnewi manufacture, assemble motorcycles and other vehicle engine parts; Edison fabricates brake pads and linings; OCE filters produces oil filters; Coscharis Group produces timing and roller chain; Godwin-Kris Company fabricates vehicle rubber parts; Uru Industries produces brake cables; Cutix Plc and Adswitch manufacture electric switchgear and cables; Ebunso produces process equipment; John White produces fan belts. Abia State is another crucial state in the South East with its capital at Umuahia and Aba as the major commercial nerve center of the state in terms of industrialization. Aba is known for its ingenuity and the industry of its people in handcrafts, including fashion and design, shoe making, textiles, steel works and fabrications, plastics and cosmetics, amongst others, this has result to the greater generation of internally generated revenue used in running the state. Made in Aba goods like bags, shoes, belts and garments make waves in other countries not just in West African Sub-region but also beyond its periphery. Aba has what it takes to become an industrial hub of Nigeria therefore needs a facelift by Nigeria government on its market to openly atualize its widest dream.
