How do you escape the Corporate slave job after a decade of indoctrination?

in #advice8 years ago

I hope anyone that sees the title is not looking to find the answer to that question.
Rather, I'm looking to get comments from people who have advice or real life examples of someone escaping the rat race and having a more enjoyable life as a result.

I've been working at a well known US Bank (Custodian/Asset Servicing) for 11 years now. It grates on me that I work for such an evil entity but I feel after being here so long, that they've got me for life.

You look at other jobs but the salary doesn't match, so it kind of keeps you there and accept that maybe this is it. Wait for my 65th birthday and retire. I'm only 36 so sticking with it for another 30 years doesn't sound ideal.

There's the option of leaving and just starting fresh somewhere, but then you get used to what you make and nobody wants to lose money, so that is also a little daunting.

After the corporation sucks the soul from you, you question what skills you actually have to offerand come to realise that you don't really have any apart from what can be used solely at the current employer ie Subject Matter Expert for an internal system that nobody else uses outside of the Bank.

I watch these Anarchast videos and all these great people on there. And I just think 'what the fuck can I actually do for myself and still generate the same level of income (approx 30k) and be happy?'.

Corporate indoctrination, for me, seems to have killed my happiness, my self worth, my drive and determination, impacted my health both mentally and physically.
I'm sure I'm not alone but I'm sure there are people who wouldn't understand what I'm saying and just tell you to suck it up.

I sometimes just think fuck it, sell everything, but a camper van and just fuck off somewhere.

I'm just vexxing and rambling.

Apologies if you subjected yourself to the ranting but if anything resonates with you, and you have advice, please comment.

Thanks
