An amazing colorful Bee

Sweat bees are actually bees, although they often do not look like wasps and bees you know. They are found all over the world, with the exception of Antarctica, although they are rare in Australia and in Southeast Asia. Sometimes they can be rather boring.

The reason they are annoying is the trait that gives them their common name. They are attracted and landed on a person's skin, they collect moisture and salt in the sweat. Many people who do not recognize them as bees try to beat or scare them. Even if they are fairly docile, trying to hit them can cause a sting. The bite is usually less painful than most other bees, but it is also uncomfortable.

There are many types of sweaty bees and over 1,000 species exist only in the United States. For this reason, there may be considerable differences between species, which makes generalization difficult. For example, some sweaty bees are single and some are not. Some dig their nests on the ground and others dig a tunnel through the forest. Some are black and others have a nice metallic green color.

Like other bees, most swallows eat pollen and are often found in large numbers around flowers. They are very effective pollinators, usually found where bees grow. They are therefore a very useful type of bees for gardeners and people with orchards. In some parts of the western United States, sweating bees are the main pollinators of various crops, including alfalfa.

Often, their importance is not emphasized enough, perhaps because they do not produce honey like bees. If a person is not allergic to toxins in the bite of a sweaty bee, he should be left alone. Although some species protect their nests, this species of bees are not aggressive and does not rave like many other bees and wasps.

Most people have probably seen sweaty bees, though perhaps they have not recognized them as bees.

So. There are 1000 species of sweat bee in the US? I'm guessing I've been bitten by maybe 900 :) With a considerable number from one or two species.

Thanks for a great post about what I normally consider a pest.

Great! That was lovely, thank you :)
