The one thing websites should stop doing that drives people away from them

Something I notice more and more around the Internet, especially on the websites of people who don't really know what they are doing, is a pop-up that appears too often saying "You cannot read this article, please turn off AdBlock".

We all saw this kind of thing at least once and I think we all agree it's extremely annoying. People denying you access to the content they want YOU to see, because you are using AdBlock. If you're not, you should, and if you are, good for you.

Now, if you don't know what AdBlock is, it's an extension you can install on your browser that blocks most ads on the Internet. It blocks the ads from YouTube, Facebook and most websites out there. And people use it for a good reason - we're tired of ads.

Don't get me wrong, one little add in a corner won't bother anyone, but when you give me ads over ads, when I can't click anywhere on the website without having to close the new window that just appeared telling me that I can play a sexy 3d virtual sex game, that's when you went too far.

It doesn't matter who you are and how amazing your website is, if you use too many ads and you also ask people to turn off AdBlock or they can't read your content, that's when you're denying the thing you want most - the attention of people.

The funny thing is that this problem could easily be avoided by doing two things: either turn off that annoying pop-out and let people use that extension as much as they want, or bring down the number of ads on your website. It's that simple. I know most people who have a website have a hard time making money, and even with ads that's really hard, but to be honest, there's a reason for that - people hate them. Not only that, but ads are so bad these days that it's easy to spot them and not click on them.

You can already see all kind of people giving up on their website and starting to create content for places like Steemit or Medium where you don't have ads and it's actually easier to make some money. Either you get a few dollars a day from the upvotes people give you, or you work enough to form a community around your content to then sell something or make the people following you give you money in all kind of ways.

No matter the case, ads are dying every single day, and if you think that's how you'll make money, then make sure you're ready for the day everyone on the Internet will figure out what AdBlock is and no one will access a website without that extension on their browser.

That day will come and you won't be able to get anyone on your website telling them to turn off AdBlock, because no one wants 500 ads on their screen once they access any website out there. So, for your own sake and for the sake of the people consuming your content, find a way to make money without using ads and disable that annoying pop-out, because having that on your website is the easiest way to make people leave and never return.

Great article. There was a website that I used to go to daily for the great content. The all of a sudden there were so many ads that it became too much a pain to read the articles. Oddly enough, most of the revenue went to the website owner and not to the content writers. I stopped going to that website. Interesting how the ads stopped traffic and drove away readership. May have to pay it one last visit to invite the writers over here to steemit.

Would be a great idea, maybe the writers from that website will have a better time writing here for themselves and actually making some money out of it.

I really think ads will be gone pretty soon, because no one wants to be interrupted while watching content, and ads are doing exactly that. I guess people will have to find new ways to make money or use the ones that already exist - selling things, promoting and reviewing products, using Steemit and so on.

Thanks for the comment! :)
