As to the second part, while I certainly appreciate the transparency, I'm not sure about the decision. While I haven't been rooting my devices for a while, it's something I've done in the past, as do many open source enthusiasts. I understand that rooted devices may not get the same automated security updates, but there is also no shortage of manufacturers who don't send those out as they should, because of the effort necessary to fit their own layer on top of the OS to whatever changes the update makes. To me, this feels like a misstep. Possibly your first. If you have strong, solid reasoning behind it, I'd be interested in reading it.
