Ethnography is a historical and geographical description of arts, myths, oral cultures, and other cultural characteristics of people's consciousness, economic forms, political organizations, social organizations, and religious concepts, in the manner in which historical and cultural anthropology is embodied. It means exploring what 'thinking' people do in their society and how they live their lives.

However, the ethnographies of history or historical and cultural anthropology, or eventually, 'I' is the 'who' is now, 'who' came from, and 'recognition' system that determines where 'to go' or should go.

The reason for such a long story in the Caucasus region and ethnography is due to the film The Shadow of Forgotten Ancestors, directed by Sergei Parajanov (1924 ~ 1990) in 1964. Been wanting to delve deeper to know much about the history, So I decided to purchased this movie and watched it on a DVD.

It's only a 90-minute movie, but I was caught in shock and afterglow. This film was the first to come up with a strong impulse and desire to write about the movies that history has encountered. I did. That's how It started. Later, Parajanov said he was a former Soviet Union who had a great influence on modern film history. Moreover, he is from the Georgian state of Caucasus. It is also called Georgia depending on pronunciation. Georgia is also home to Stalin. However, Parajanov is also an ethnic minority in the Republic of Georgia.

The reason why I was shocked by this film was because of the amazing experience and awe that history can be expressed like this.

Parajanov adapted the folklore of the Ukrainian Carpathians to create The Shadow of Forgotten Ancestors. Two main characters in the movie. Ivan and marichka are lovers of each other. But the two families regard each other as enemies. While Ivan leaves the village for a while, Marchka falls into the river and drowns, Ivan grieved for a while then married another woman. Shortly afterwards, Ivan's marriage is ruined by his wife's injustice, and he eventually dies.

It's a simple story. The story of the movie is just a role to make a way, but it does not mean much. 90 minutes remain in the formal story. However, the true value of this film is expressed not in the story of the drama but in nature, color and sound.

Outstanding narrator and director Parajanov created myths, histories, poetry, ethnography, dance and rituals with the movements of the camera, the colorful colors and the fascinating brilliance. Sergey Parajanov was a painter and poet. What he expressed in this film was also an aesthetic color image and a poetic lyrical atmosphere. He just a person who plays the role of a tool in the main character Ivan. Along with trees, beasts, mountains, houses, rain, and wind, man is also a tool of nature and the vast flow of history is connotated as a sign of life.
Can any book of history capture history and life like this? It could only be expressed in words of wonder.

Overall, "The Shadow of Forgotten Ancestors," is an imaginary total that embodies history with five senses encompassing vision and hearing, is a cruel reflection of the world in which we are living, which we dare not cross.
