What’s Really Happening on Steem?
Lately, something has been noticeably missing from the Steem platform—genuine interaction. Many posts now receive little to no comments, and engagement from fellow users seems to be steadily declining.
It feels like we may have strayed off course. Increasingly, users are treating Steem more as a mining operation than a social blockchain. Many post daily, not to connect or contribute meaningfully, but simply to extract rewards. Often, the content that receives high payouts lacks real effort or value. It's more about maximizing earnings from the reward pool than contributing quality content.
We see the same trend with competitions: even when prizes are generous, participation has dropped dramatically. What used to spark creativity and community engagement is now often met with silence.
Local communities on Steem tend to appear and disappear frequently. That’s understandable to some extent, but in several cases, it seems once some initial profit has been made, the enthusiasm fades—and those running the community simply disappear without a trace.
It's not wrong to want to earn from your posts—after all, that’s part of what makes Steem appealing. But when quality posts go unrewarded, or not rewarded enough, talented writers become discouraged. They lose interest, stop contributing, and eventually leave the platform. This is a serious loss for all of us.
New members continue to join Steem, which is great. However, very few invest by purchasing Steem from exchanges. Most simply earn and immediately cash out their rewards. They don't build Steem Power, and as a result, they don't contribute to strengthening the ecosystem.
Right now, there's only one major investor who entered the Steem ecosystem a few years ago and has since made a massive impact. Without his continued support, it's likely the price of Steem would be significantly lower—or possibly even without any real value. Most of us know who he is, and I want to personally thank him for everything he’s done for Steem. Of course, there are other investors who have been here for years, and their support matters too.
But here's the bottom line: if people continue to sell their earned Steem without ever investing or building up their Steem Power, the price of Steem is unlikely to rise.
There are real buyers on exchanges who are supporting the value of Steem. If the price continues to fall, they may lose interest and move on to more profitable cryptocurrencies. Then what?
Many complain about the low price of Steem. But take a moment to ask yourself—are you contributing to that problem?
Without a strong base of Steem Power, this ecosystem cannot thrive. If those with large SP decide to power down, leave, and sell their Steem, the consequences could be devastating for the platform. The price could collapse.
So this is a call to action:
Dear Steemians—build your Steem Power. Invest in the platform, support the ecosystem, and help secure a sustainable and vibrant future for Steem. Let’s bring back the community spirit, the engagement, and the quality that once made Steem such a promising project.

For me, the whole issue starts from the onboarding process.
For many people, the only way they can invite friends to join steemit is by luring them with the benefits without telling them the challenges they had to pass through before getting to where they are…
So, when this newcomers come on board especially those ones who are not into writing but are forced to rack their brains just to come up with a beautiful piece, pass plagiarism test, pass AI Test, when they don’t get the expected reward, they start getting discouraged gradually feeling rejected.
Sometimes, when they compare their post with someone that they feel they did better than in the challenge but got upvote from curators or from friends, they feel ignored and want to exit the system unknown to them that this persons they are comparing their post with has built a good relationship and reputation in the system.
Another tiny challenge i also want to point out is that people are attached to certain bloggers because they enjoy reading their content all the time and it somehow places limitations making them unable to see the newcomers who just joined.
We also can’t rule out poverty rate as well. People are trying to make a living. So, when they feel a system isn’t meeting their expectations, they run off…

Well, you are not the one acting as a good example, are you?!
Of course, it's easy to reply to comments on your own post.
But do you also look beyond your own bubble? Do you read what others write, engage with it? Or is it just “WoX auto-vote trail” and done?
If I’m being unfair, I apologize - but this is exactly how it appears to users who take the time to ask: “Who actually is Xpilar?”
You do know you're a role model for many, right? Yes, you do.
I assume that in Norway - a nation steeped in fishing traditions - you have a similar saying to the one we use in Northern Germany (also a fishing stronghold): “The fish rots from the head down.”

If you mean commenting, I agree that I'm not a good example of that. Yes, I also read other people's posts, I wish I had even more time for that. That's one of the reasons why a few years ago we brought in moderators to give comments.
It worked for a while, but I understand that moderators can also get bored. I'm primarily an investor and founder, not a blogger. And have contributed to a number of competitions over the time for steemians to be active.
Everything from writing competitions to lotteries and many other things that contribute to the community. You ask the question "Or is it just “WoX auto-vote trail” and done?" then I'd say you don't know me at all.
maybe @stef1 will comment on that.
My post is meant to debate which way Steem is going and I would like you to talk a little about that too. Maybe you can tell a little about your own community and why it works so well, so that others can learn from

Yes, I mean commenting - just commenting (which is actually the first question in your article).
No, we’ve rarely had personal contact. But of course I know you, especially from way back. Naturally, I’m also aware of all the things you’ve done and developed for Steem. You don’t have to keep pointing that out. Plus, you already have enough users constantly highlighting that for you.
Well, I too have invested a lot of money in Steem. However, I was never interested in a big ROI. Until the end, I held on to the idealistic (or rather foolish, foolish, foolish?) notion of using my relatively large stake to support the posts that I genuinely liked, or where someone clearly put in effort. Not to mention all the “educational” attempts to explain to users why it’s important to build their own stake and use it to give back to the community.
I won’t discuss the pros and cons of all the “modern” innovations with you. That’s been done a thousand times, and I’m tired. So very tired.
Just this much: Every bit of automation kills creativity. Some - even among your formerly very creative and communicative moderators - have no hesitation in settling down the moment they’ve secured their catch (ha, another fitting fish metaphor).
To comment “properly,” you first have to find a post that actually interests you, that makes you want to engage, that inspires a response. Posts like that still sporadically exist. But how long do you expect an interested reader to search through all the fast-fire content, spam, scams, and blah blah blah? No chance. The audience you're trying to reach is no longer here.
When I referred to the “smelly fish,” I didn’t mean you personally but rather all the “influencers.” How are users supposed to learn how Steem originally worked if all those who still remember act completely differently now?
As a teacher, I can tell you: the only thing that works is “show, then follow.” Unfortunately, this applies to everything influencers demonstrate (or don’t).
Have a lovely Sunday!

Thank you, dear friend, for your tiredless attempt to revive the spirit of people on Steemit, to tell the truth I am slowly loosing my faith, especially seeing that even Tron nowadays overtaken Steem and if before it was very little value now it is double so much than Steem. It is difficult to imagine that it is one and the same person who owns both Steem and Tron and who cares more about one but less about the other. I run out of ideas what is behind the whole buy of Steemit for Justin. Every time when I see that Steem goes down when the other Crypto have a tendency to go up, I just stop looking at the trend because I am afraid to find that Steem drop even further down bellow 0,10
In my eyes, the problem is marketing and it is always a case. There should be people who invest and stake without "hurting" themselves financially. I am aware that the majority of people here are from countries where they rely at least on Steem in order to have some financial backup and those people will be always withdrawing Steem.
When I look around I see many who got reasonable Steem Power due to their activities in Steemit challenges and comments but then withdrew it either compleltely or partially, then stop activities but return because this is only income they have.
You also, mentioned long term investors, yes, they grow their Steem Power so only do that and stake it, some withdrew some Steem for expences and it is their right. Those users who hold a big stakes they still help to maintain the Price of Steem, because if we imagine that one day they all decide to Power Down and sell Steem that will be the end of Steem. Therefore, those who still keep SP should be considered as good for the environment of Steem community. Those people they are here for financial interest and not for blogging.
The communities will not exist long if there is no support, have you noticed that since Steemit withdrew Booming support from communities many communities are slowly stopping their activities. That is a reality.
On other hand just remember how it was in the past, there was no Upvote guarantee, there is no "Steemit Team" like "big daddy" who were supporting people for their activities and people were learning to survive themselves and that was the time when people were active.

Dear @chriddi, Iunderstand what you mean with saying that people should look what they do themselves, that is right. The same time I understand the goal of the post of @xpilar, he always strived to create an environment where people feel not alone. It is true that our community was more active from point of view of comments from moderators and I remember many including myself spending hours on daily basis searching users, writing replies, giving some hints where I could.
If to look for the reasons what has been changed I will speak only for myself:
it is 8 years since we joint and if initially we motivated to be active and do everything to be rewarded because of high Steem price and that time our little Steem Power, where we were trying to do everything to be seen slowly but surely that dream faded off. Now we have collected out SP but despite of what is happening now on Steem from Investors or Development it does not make Steem price to go up.
as @xpilar mentioned, he is a long term investor who is supporting Steemians and their projects, he is giving Upvotes, he is running competitions since he joined and giving away Steem as Prizes but also he is running still WOX-helpfund and giving away Steem to the users who need. The same like him, we were running @art-venture for few years and give aways Steem as prizes too. It is sad that users often decide to withdraw steem instead of to grow SP
the other reason, my professional field of work, that now I have more clinical activities and responsibilities that take majority of my time and my commitment. That is now my priority and I even at home I have to work on some staff.
I can only say that in this case "the head of a fish" is the most lively and fresh and trying to do its best to encourage people around :)

Well then, everything’s just fine — since we all seem to understand each other’s intentions… 😉
Oh Karly, how many hours have we spent over the years discussing all these points? And honestly, you don’t need to keep emphasizing what you or Xpilar have done for Steem. You’re speaking about the past - and so am I, because I’m simply tired now too.
Everyone has their personal reasons for doing what they do, or for stopping. That’s normal, we all change and evolve. Whether someone else approves of that evolution really doesn’t matter - and I mean that completely without judgment.
Just one more thing: The fish metaphor wasn’t aimed solely at Xpilar. It applies to all “influencers.” And yes, I include both you and myself in that category (and especially those that almost everyone follows like some kind of salvation: the Steemit Team). I just elaborated on it a bit more when addressing Xpilar.
Have a lovely Sunday,
Christiane

I noticed that for a while now, people hardly make comments, most time what I noticed is that they find it hard to comment... Simply by saying they don't know what to say..
I don't feel good about it. Some do not even know that they can earn on comments too. That's why I mentioned @wakeupkitty anytime, anywhere because I see her as met engaging user since i have join Steemit. Not just one community but different communities especially a Newcomer community. When I joined I had that same excuses of knowing what to comment but after some engagement with her...... It changes everything.
There's a lot you can earn or learn by engaging. You'll never know someone unless you start a conversation. I try as much as possible to engage and honestly speaking I can tell you that it's not for vain.
You guys should support @wakucat as a witness.
Interaction and engagement is her top priority.

Hola, amigos.
Saludos.
