A walk around Toompea

in #photography6 years ago

If you've never visited Estonia, you're probably unaware that Toompea, the center for the Estonian Government, is the oldest inhabited place in Tallinn.

Earliest written documents refer to Toompea as just a hill or a stronghold. But geographically, Toompea is just a limestone hill in the middle of our capital.

Our walk start from a bit further away - good luck finding a parking spot around Toompea - so we walk through an exhibition near the old town.

The exhibition has been here for years, if I remeber correctly and features various installments with flowers, random objects and incorporating them often into weird glimpses to another and imaginative reality.

The installments change often, but they are always a bit, umm... different :)

"Do not trample on flowers" - would be the name of the above installation, if I was the author.

Moving on, we pass the Šnelli pond at the base of Toompea hill, where a family of ducks is creating ripples. The babies look too cute to be real.

Below you can see a view towards Toompea hill from below, from the pond.

As you can see, the walls are built on top of the natural rocks in such a manner that leaves the natural rocks also visible in some places.

We climb up the stairs at the Pilsticker Tower, built in 16th century (the tower, not the stairs). Look at the windows - I am sorry that people had to live with such little light in the old days.

On the other side of this building is the Toompea Castle along with the Government Office.

We reach the Governor's Garden, where the Estonian Flag is hoisted at the top of Tall Hermann tower.

We circle back around the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral (pictured below) to reach another viewing platform on the north side of Toompea, where a small and hungry seagull is demanding food from tourists.

There's no shortage of viewing platforms up in Toompea, offering visitors a a view to every direction.

On this platform, one one side, you can see the House of Stenbock, the seat of Estonian Government and the other side offers a nice view towards Oleviste Church and the red roofs of Tallinn Old Town.

The tower of the church can also be visited for a small "donation", but keep in mind that you'll have to climb a loooot of steps to reach there :)

We leave Toompea from the other side, walking by a curious museum of local drinking culture, which I still haven't managed to visit, shamefully.

On our way, this old house with this crumbling balcony catches my eye. Would you step on that balcony? No? But what a view, eh?

You have a minor misspelling in the following sentence:

The exhibition has been here for years, if I remeber correctly and features various installments with flowers, random objects and incorporating them often into weird glimpses to another and imaginative reality.
It should be remember instead of remeber.

No, I definitely wanted to write "remeber" :)

better not to enter this balcony because it can collapse, but maybe it is better to risk? :D

Awesome click of an awesome place.
Nice post
