A Clear Conscience: A Treasure To Uphold
I have come to understand that in life, one of the greatest treasures to uphold is a clear conscience - that is, a moral sense that is born out of truth, and void of guilt, regrets, or deception. You will agree with me that there is a level of peace that comes into your mind when you know that you have done the right thing and that your actions are not rooted in offence. In this era and at this point in time, a lot of people are so engrossed with chasing money, influence, fame, and other material things without minding on whose toes they step on. When you have gotten the influence without a clear conscience, how will you become fulfilled and at peace? This is why some people, after getting a lot of material things, they will become empty and restless. You have to learn to treasure and value a clear conscience.
In your place of work for example, in your dealings with people, when you know that you are honest, you will not live with the fear of being exposed. For someone who is dishonest or into lies, it may look like a shortcut, but at the end, it will become a trap. There is nothing that is gotten out of lies and deceit that will be worthwhile at the end. When someone starts off with lies for example, they may need other lies to cover up their track, and may even stand the risk of forgetting the lies that they have told earlier and they will become inconsistent. But the truth will always be remembered consistently even after times have passed. This is why I believe that when you are walking in truth, then you are walking in freedom.
A friend once told a story of what happened during one of their promotional examination. In the previous years, the promotion of staff was solely based on the written exam. However, something turned around that year and they did a different thing. After the written exam, it was reported that some people cheated in the exam and got really high scores. For those that cheated, they felt that they have gotten away with it and they saw it as a smart shortcut, but it was actually a trap. When the results came out, the company also organised a physical exam. Adorably, it was the same questions that were asked, so for those who had written it the previous time, it would be a walkover.
What was so ironic is that some of the people who scored really high could not defend the result. Some of them could not even answer the questions correctly the second time. How will you explain someone scoring about 98% initially and could not score up to 20% in the next one which was still the same question? The people who had a clear conscience that they had done their best did not have any problem doing it again. This is to tell you that a success that will last should be built on a solid foundation, not a faulty foundation of lies, deceit, and falsehood. The peace of mind that comes when you have done the right thing is priceless.
You also need to understand that you require a good conscience to improve your relationship with people. When people remark you for being honest and humane, they will trust you. Of course, you will agree with me that trust is a fundamental bedrock of any relationship. When there is trust, as a result of showing honesty, there will be no room for suspicion, insecurity, and doubt. Trust also leads to respect and unity.
Good conscience is also needed at the leadership level. If you have a leader who treats everyone with respect, who is straightforward, and who does the right thing, you will be motivated to also do the right thing, and you will not have a problem following them. Leaders who make decisions that are based on truth, honesty, and sincerity, will earn long-term respect. In everything you do, you have to do it with a clear conscience. Everyone knows if what they are doing is right. If your heart starts to question your actions and decisions, then you need to retrace your steps.
