Bereket Package
A few days ago we drove to a city in Turkey to do some stress-relief shopping :)
I think I'll have to create another post, to describe my observations and reflections, as I haven't been to this particular city in more than 5 year and there was a huge change. However, today I want to share about one of the items I got from Migros, one of the biggest supermarket chains in the country.
Bulgarians driving to Turkey for shopping has been something common, let's say at least in the last ten years, maybe more. I'd say, even today, with the huge inflation and the economic issues Turkey has, still many things, food items, especially, are much cheaper.
Another fun fact is that the most of the Bulgarian travel agencies have regular "shopping trips" with busses from all around Bulgaria. There is a highway connecting our capital city - Sofia, with the Turkish border, so that particular trip is about 3 hours with a car and 4 hours tops with a bus. And it is worth it.
So, let's cut to the chase. The particular item I want to show you today is called "Bereket Paketi"
In English that would be "Abundance Package".
Now, for the sake of total honesty, when I decided to buy this, I wasn't exactly sure what's inside! :)
There were two versions - bigger and smaller and this is the smaller version.
"Bereket" however, is one of those Turkish words, that despite having an exact Bulgarian version, is still in use in the regular spoken Bulgarian.
It is a word with 100% positive sentiment and moreover people wish to each other "Bereket", "Abundance" in the original meaning of the word. So guess what, I was just enchanted by the idea ;)
Roaming Internet prices in Turkey are killing, so I didn't use goggles either. Still, I was able to recognize some of the items from the list on the box, so that was enough for me.
Here is the Google Translate output into English (the box has only text in Turkish):
Let me open the package and get everything out for a snap ;)
Unfortunately I wasn't the first person to open the package as the customs checked the box at the border on our way back...
I must say, I am completely happy with that particular purchase.
Here comes the "money part" ;)
The "Abundance Package" costs TRY 370
This is about BGN 18 or a little more than EUR 9
If I've bought the same items on the Bulgarian market, I would pay those BGN 18 just for three of the items - the sunflower oil (the cheapest here is 3 BGN for 1 litter) + the black tea (the cheapest I found is BGN 12.50 for 500 gr) and the spaghetti (BGN 2.50 for similar quality class).
So all the remaining ten items are a bonus ;)
We already cooked some of the Fusilli with some of the tomato pasta and I'd say, all delicious and fine quality.
See how sometimes even the small things could make us feel better :) Happy :)))
I hope you find this entertaining or helpful :)
Sad truth is, food prices in Bulgaria are probably the highest in EU.
What actually sucks the most is VAT for the food is 20%, unlike almost all the rest of the EU countries that have reduced VAT for food. (0% - 3% - 9% - 13%). That is, however, a topic for another day...
