A Gazillion Coffees... and a little bit of Floral Chaos!
Saturday morning rolled in and I found myself staring at the tea-stained canvas lying on the table. I danced around it all day… coffee number one, coffee number two, my midday sourdough sandwich, and a late afternoon cup of tea. It took a solid chunk of the day before I finally sat my hiney down and actually started doing something, lol.
I must have gone through the whole dictionary of emotions while I was at it. One moment I was inspired – cutting bits out, paging through moms old gardening digests filled with pressed flowers – and the next, I was downright annoyed!
The mess on the table was starting to look more like a tornado had passed through than a workspace, and I had half a mind to pack it all up in a huff and pretend I hadn’t even started. I didn’t. Glory. And to think I call my dog the one with special needs… hahaha!!!
My late mom, an incredible artist and “informal” art teacher, always said: “It’s the layers, layers, layers that take art from average to something special.” She was right – and I know it – but that doesn’t stop my impatient Gemini self from wanting to see the final picture immediately. Actually, not even immediately – yesterday would be ideal, haha!
But deep down, I know that’s not how traditional art works. It’s part of the lesson, hey. One of many. So I stuck it out – one moody swing after the next, lol.
Eventually, the frustration melted away, as it always does, and I got properly lost in the process. It still blows my mind how quickly we doubt ourselves. Our conscious minds are so good at muting our intuition and turning us into these stumped, stuck versions of ourselves that can’t even take the next small step forward.
I don’t know how many more times I’ll need to go through this cycle of self-doubt, but I do know I plan on facing it more often now… with open eyes and a bit of cheek! This morning I dropped some orders at the courier and bought myself two new canvasses – just to gently nudge myself in the direction I know my heart wants to go.
As for that tea-stained canvas? It turned into a rather lovely, healing afternoon of putting together a bit of my own floral madness. If you don’t know this about me already – I am not a minimalist. I love chaos in art. Like, really love it. The busier a piece is, the more it draws me in.
Over the years, I’ve noticed that my background in graphic design and my move into more “free form” art have actually married quite beautifully – which still surprises me, because they’re so wildly different. But I suppose all that time spent learning precision – paying attention to details down to the last millimetre,
understanding balance, and loving geometric shapes, has somehow blended well with my absolute love for wild, expressive layers. The result? A bit unexpected, but honestly, quite lekker.
It’s not finished yet – still needs a few finishing touches on the vase and then a proper seal – but once it’s done, I’ll pop it up in my new shop.
Would love to know what you think? Honestly – no sugar-coated fluff, please and thank you!
❤❤❤
Until next time...
