Unexpected Encounter

This morning the dog woke me up early. I splashed two handfuls of water on my face, brushed my teeth and we went for a walk in the forest. Walking along the road to the end of the village we saw the sunrise. I saw it exactly, I'm not sure about the dog, he kept sniffing something with his head bowed. We left the village, walked through the meadows and shortly before entering the forest, he pulled me towards some bushes on the side of the path. Behind the bushes you could see scattered bird feathers. Apparently some kind of life drama had played out in these bushes during the night. The strong had defeated the weak. Some predator had fed. We stood for a while with the dog by the bushes. He was sniffing the grass, I think.

We continued along the path and entered the forest. The sun had risen above the horizon and its first rays were penetrating between the leaves of the trees. It smelled of a forest. We were almost up the steep slope when the dog pulled me off the path again, this time towards some trees. I followed him and saw a turtle. I bent down to get a better look at it. The dog ignored him and began sniffing around a pile of dry leaves and twigs near it. I took a stick and poked around a little. A hole was discovered in which the turtle had laid five eggs. The dog sniffed them and went to the neighboring tree to rest. I covered them again with the leaves and we continued our walk.
