Make your own library with Calibre!

in #utopian-io7 years ago

Greetings, in this tutorial we are going to make our own virtual library and learn to transfer books into an E-reader device. To do that we need a software capable of sending & receiving files between computer and device.

Released in 2006, Calibre’s main duty is to convert several document formats into reader friendly, editable and a compressed Epub format.

How to install?

To install the software simply go to downloads page on calibre-ebook.com and pick your operation system. After selecting the installation folder it will take few seconds to finish the setup process.

How to make your very own library?

Once you run the software you will encounter an introduction, welcome screen like the one below,

Firstly we need to add our books to the "virtual library" of Calibre. In order to do that we need to have supported book files in our local storage. In our site they claim that the supported formats are,

In order of decreasing preference: LIT, MOBI, AZW, EPUB, AZW3, FB2, DOCX, HTML, PRC, ODT, RTF, PDB, TXT, PDF (source)

So thereby the very first step is to drag-drop the files from the local storage to the virtual library of calibre or just click add-books from top right panel and select the books. (hint: in windows you can select multiple files by holding shift key)
It will take few seconds and after you add your books the virtual library will look like this,

Here we go, now you created your own library. As a second step you can merge the books on your library with your e-reader and able to read these books in a reader friendly environment. To do that simply connect your e-reader to your computer and use send to device panel on your calibre. Once you done you can check it from the OnDevice panel on library segment. If there is green tick located on the right side then it means that the book is located on your main storage

Green tick represents they are successfully transfered.

As a last check or to see/edit your books on your device you can proceed to device panel from above and get a list of your books in the device,

All the books in here are located in your e-readers storage and ready to use!

Note that there are 23 books in the device where we only transferred 17. The reason for this is because of the some default guides, dictionaries and previously added books on the device.

Pros

  • Works on multi platforms
  • Rapid transfer and conver duration.
  • Can do meta or cover check, matching for your books.
  • Quite tiny takes only 183 Mb space.
  • Multiple language support
Cons
  • May give poor results while converting pictures in pdf files.
