Effectiveness : This is a method of verifying transactions and creating new blocks on the blockchain. Here, miners solve a complex mathematical puzzle using a large amount of computing power. The miner who finds the solution first creates the new block and is rewarded. Bitcoin uses this method.
Problem : This method is very power-intensive. It consumes a huge amount of electricity, which has a negative impact on the environment.
Efficiency : In the PoS method, "forging" or "validating" is done instead of mining. Here, there are "validators" instead of miners. Validators get the opportunity to create blocks according to the amount of cryptocurrency they have. The more coins they have "staked", the more likely they are to be validated. Ethereum 2.0 uses this method.
Advantages : This method is much more environmentally friendly than PoW. Because it does not require solving complex mathematical problems, electricity consumption is reduced by about 99%.
The environmental impact of crypto mining is mainly due to the PoW method. It is designed in such a way that mining requires a lot of computing power, which results in skyrocketing electricity consumption.
Huge electricity consumption : The amount of electricity consumed for Bitcoin mining is more than the total electricity consumption of many countries, such as Argentina or Belgium. This electricity is mainly produced using fossil fuels, which emit large amounts of carbon dioxide and accelerate climate change.
E-waste : The specialized computer chips (ASICs) used for mining quickly become obsolete and produce e-waste that is harmful to the environment.
