Visiting Uruan's River to Gather Information for my Research Project
This is my final year in the University. It seems to be the hardest year since I started my journey in the university. I've faced lots of challenges lately trying to balance project work with seminar, personal life, lectures and the likes but nonetheless, everything is achievable if determination is the watchword. I love making whatever I do so real in such a way that I can defend when asked during my defense.
Steemit has taught me content writing to the extent that I've made originality my watchword. When creating contents, I try to make use of my creative mind and allow my imagination run wild. The human brain is capable of fostering a lot of thoughts if put into proper use. Recently, the use of Ai by students to run projects, seminars and lot more broad topics has replaced human thinking and has made students lazy..
My visitation to this place is to do some finding, use the archaic methods of research to make the research project real to me instead of depending or relying on information from the network or research done by others even though it may be of use as references. My project Topic is on water pollution and control. With this in mind, I know my dependent and independent variables and then decided to make this project real to me.
I wanted to see things for myself that's why I took up this task of visiting the popular Uruan beach that links to cross river and other local government area in my state.
On Movement |

Boarding a vehicle to the river took a lot from me honestly speaking. I was discouraged because **I'd have to spend lot of money for transportation to the river as it's not in close range to where I stay. **Boarding a vehicle to the place costs me 2000 naira.
From Ifa junction - Ring road roundabout | 200 naira | 0.9 steems |

On Arrival |
---|
On arrival, I found the place to be very strange as I'm not familiar with the people there. I just walked smartly to where their workshop for making boats is. I went there and sat comfortably as if nothing happened. I pretended to be familiar with the environment and greeted everyone nicely. After observing my environment well, I took a leap.
I approached a man comfortably and explained my motives and intentions. He said I can do anything I want to do there. Peace of mind flowed. I felt secured immediately because at first, I had thought that snapping without permission could lead to implications. Not as if I was going to do something there and I feared those people as my mind ran to the experiences of killing along the river banks.
Findings and Survey |
---|
I made my analysis of the river and also surveyed how big it was and how extended it went. I also made enquiries as to the tides and water current, how often goods are offloaded and uploaded and whether transportation of oil is done through pipelines as I observed oil spillage on the river bay.

Not all informations were revealed to me so I was satisfied with the off-loading and uploading. It all depends though as timber and other goods are gotten on weekends and a day during mid-day. These timbers are stacked in a particular place and sawed when used for their boats as they make it thick to avoid bleakage. They also shape it in a way that it would look more like a boat..

There's a space carved for their engine which runs on diesel and has an iron padle which is triggered by the engine and placed in water to propel movement while the boat man controls it. I stepped into the river bank barefoot as my footwear isn't completely rubber and I didn't want it to get soaked. When I stepped in, my legs felt the warmth of the river. While trying to examine the water and what pollutes it, I discovered that there are living organisms in the water, both macro and micro.
I saw some fishes of small sizes going as a school. They were so fast in such a way that I couldn't even catch one. I tried using a net but to no avail. I took my time to look deeply examine how nutrients are contaminated. The water looks pale and didn't if fetched. This is because of erosion from the river bay and some other pollutants like weeds, oil and dirts from boats.

There are a number of good canoes and boats in the river. Some of them are broken and kept aside. I observed one big boat that has probably been abandoned for years. Took pictures of it and other boats in the area.
Observation and Sample collection |
---|
I observed something that contributes to the pollution of this place and the dangers it poses to the villagers who survived on it. **Some villagers were washing clothes with detergents by the river bank while others were fetching the water on another end to use for cooking. Still others were bathing inside the river at another corner of the river. They have the belief that the water washes and runs in a daily basis and that there's virtually nothing wrong with using the water for consumption.

I took a small quantity of the water to test the level of pollution and pollutants not visible to the human eyes. Microorganisms are also affected badly by the actions of man in the water. Some get killed by the oil and some other pollutants. If care isn't taken, people dump waste there with the beliefs it would be washed away by water current.

The video shows me examining everything I saw there in the river. I also saw boat men trying to clean their boats, getting it ready for transportation. Most of them just did Test-Run of the boat first to see if the engine is in good state. After doing a basic video of the river, I left to interview one of the villagers living around there but unfortunately, they weren't used to videos and didn't want to be put on display. This they feared even with the offer I gave them..
Few minutes when I left the river to map some beautiful locations in that local government area, my legs started itching me. The water caused this itching. It itch me in such a way that I was very uncomfortable. I started scratching my foot but to no avail. I then wondered how people bath there in the river with their bare bodies.
If my legs could itch me because of the water, then how safe is it for drinking? I asked myself a lot of questions before moving on to map some locations like the Ibom Hotel and Golf Resort. I was able to map two locations that day before leaving.

My phone served as my writing material and photos taking. The project was now clear and visible to me. I had hypothetical questions in mind which I wrote down and others relevant to my research. I didn't have to make much of the research from other researchers as I was a researcher who has a real experience on the topic. So someone can use my as a reference material when I'm done with my writing.
