Restaurant Review: Beef Pares in Mactan, Basak Lapu-Lapu Branch

Earlier, I've had a post about Tuslob Buwa,, one of the most well-known street foods here in the Philippines, which uses a pig's brain as the main ingredient. Now I'll share it with you again, another street food that went viral online last year. It is called “ Beef Pares,” which also comes with unlimited soup and rice. The moment I heard about it, I asked myself. Really? Are those unlimited? Is this even real? I wondered how they could even make a profit from it when it seems like they're almost giving it away. Maybe that is the reason why it goes viral.

Out of curiosity, it comes to my mind to try it. I've seen this “ Beef Pares in Mactan” signage on our way while picking up stock for our store. I had gotten out of school, and I was hungry. You know that feeling, when you're hungry, you’ll eat just about anything. Especially when you're watching a video and it happens to feature a viral food on Facebook, it makes you want to eat it right then and there. This’s been trending in Manila, but it’s just picking up here in Cebu. In Manila, they serve it on the sidewalk, using a tricycle setup. The one that went viral started that way, too, but eventually, they were able to open a full restaurant.
Now, we've finally entered this small restaurant that is literally beside the street. On top of their counter, some of their menus are listed. The staff entertains us immediately. Good thing there weren’t many people eating when we got there. Got the chance to chat a bit with the staff. We also found out that they actually have another branch closer to our place.

On their listed menus, my husband is supposed to have their signature dish, which is “Beef Pares,” but sadly, the staff told us that their beef hasn't arrived yet because they ordered it from Manila. The staff told us that, instead of Beef Pares, we can have Bulaklak Pares ( fried beef innards ) is available this time. The price is 120 pesos or 14.563 steem. As for my order, I chose to have Beef Steak Teryaki that cost 150 pesos or 18.23 steem. I told my husband that we just have to share our food because it would be a waste if we couldn't finish all of it.

Here it comes! I tasted first the “Bulaklak Pares.”. Who thought that your 120 pesos came with this serving? A big bowl, with chicharon bulaklak, two slices of pork adobo, 2 pieces of lumpia, and 1 piece of egg with sticky soup and a cup of rice. Take note, as I mentioned, soup and rice are unlimited...It felt like every peso was well spent.
The soup was thick and sticky, like it came straight from beef bones cooked for a long time, rich and full of flavor.. The broth is fatty, which may be the reason why they made the soup tastes a little sour. It actually felt like “lutong bahay”. With chicharon bulaklak, lumpia, and adobo on the side, it was very comforting. What made the flavors blend just right? It’s the soup. It’s very delicious.

Though I was hungry at that time, I still managed to look for something with a bit of veggies in it. Good thing their Beef Steak Teryaki was available. It had veggies on top. Like cauliflower, carrots, and cabbage. Nowadays, I tend to crave veggies more than anything else. But when I tasted the beef, no joke, it was super tender! Aside from being tender, like you don’t even have to struggle to chew… Also, it smells really tasty. And what blended well with the flavor?... Thanks to the fried garlic. It makes you eat more. The dish I ordered isn’t even popular, but I finished everything ‘cause it was that good. Of course, I was really hungry too, which definitely caused it!
Please note that soft drinks are not included with the meal, so we have to buy them separately. No cash? Just pay with G-Cash, quick and easy.
If you are not in the mood to go out, just have it delivered and enjoy your meal at home. Just message the restaurant or use apps like Foodpanda to get your favorite meals delivered right to your door.

I’ve started being more careful with my choices. With how expensive things are now, especially food. I mean, who doesn’t want something tasty, right? But I won’t go for expensive food anymore. I’m pretty sure I’ll go for something that doesn’t cost much yet tastes great. For real, I’ll go for it.
Let’s just say, now I‘m all about practicality!
