Current Education System: Reflection of Challenges, Technology, and Inequality
Good evening everyone
Trust we are all fine
This challenge is an amazing one as it deeps into education and it's challenges
Let's see what I think
The Current Education System: A Reflection of Technology, Challenges, and Inequality
Education is one of those things that should bring everybody together, give equal chances, and help people grow. But looking at the way things are now, especially in Nigeria and many other countries, our education system is more like a mirror it’s showing us all the problems we have in society, from poor technology use to deep-rooted inequality.
Let me break it down in a way we can all understand, based on what we see and experience around us.
How are students currently participating in online and offline educational activities?
Right now, students are learning in two major ways online and offline.
Offline (physical) schooling is still the most common, especially in public schools. Students wake up early, wear their uniforms, and rush to school. Some walk long distances, some even cross rivers or trek bush paths just to reach school. But when they get there, they face problems overcrowded classrooms, teachers who are not well motivated, and even lack of basic things like chairs, textbooks, or a proper blackboard.
Now, on the online side, things are a bit tricky. Many private schools and universities tried to embrace online learning, especially after COVID. But let’s be honest, how many Nigerian students truly have the tools for that? Internet is expensive. Not everybody has a smartphone or a steady laptop. Even when they do, electricity is another battle. NEPA can take light for hours or even days. How do you attend an online class with a dead phone?
Some students try to join online lectures via WhatsApp, Zoom, Google Meet, or Telegram. But poor connection frustrates the process. Many times, the audio will be cutting, or the screen will freeze. Students end up confused, or worse, lose interest completely.
How effective is the use of technology in the current education system?
Technology, in theory, should be a game changer. It should help students learn faster, access more information, and even enjoy the learning process. But in our own reality, it's mostly a struggle.
The problem isn't technology itself. The issue is access and how it’s being used. Most schools don't have the facilities. You enter some schools and you see dusty computer labs with old, spoiled systems. Some schools even have computers but no electricity to power them. Or they have the equipment, but no teacher that really understands how to use them.
In some private schools, technology is better applied. You see students learning coding, using tablets, accessing online materials, and even doing virtual science experiments. But how many children can afford those schools?
So in summary, technology is helping a few, but leaving many behind. That gap is a serious concern.
What impact does the current teaching methodology have on students' mental health and concentration?
This one touches me personally. Growing up, many of us were taught to cram and pass. Teachers didn’t really care if you understood, they just wanted you to repeat exactly what was in the textbook. That style hasn’t changed much today.
Students are under constant pressure to get good grades. They’re loaded with too many subjects, too many assignments, and very little time for rest or creativity. It’s even worse now with online classes sitting for hours on screen, barely interacting, and getting tired easily.
All these affect their mental health. Some students are battling anxiety, low self-esteem, and even depression. But they don’t talk about it because in our culture, mental health is still a taboo topic. Some parents will say, “What are you stressed about? You don’t have bills to pay.”
But it’s real. Students feel stressed, isolated, and overwhelmed. Learning should be fun and engaging, not a burden. But the way it’s done today, many students are losing interest and their concentration is dropping badly.
How can the existing disparities between urban and rural areas in education be addressed?
This one is perhaps the biggest challenge of all – the clear difference between students in the cities and those in the villages.
In urban areas, you’ll find better schools, more trained teachers, access to digital tools, and more exposure in general. Meanwhile, in rural areas, the story is sad. Many students study under trees or in broken buildings. They don’t have access to the internet, or even textbooks sometimes. Some don’t even have teachers. One teacher is forced to teach all the subjects math, English, social studies everything!
So how do we expect these kids to compete with those in the cities? The foundation itself is not the same.
To fix this, the government must be serious about investing in rural education. They should provide infrastructure proper buildings, electricity, internet, and most importantly, train more teachers and post them to rural areas. Also, NGOs and private individuals can help by donating learning materials, setting up solar-powered learning centers, or sponsoring online education hubs.
Education shouldn’t be a privilege of the rich or the urban. It should be a right for every child, no matter where they are born.
Final Thoughts
The current education system is a loud cry for help. Technology has great potential, but only a few are enjoying it. Students are trying their best, but the system isn’t supporting them well. Mental health is ignored, and inequality is widening by the day.
We need to do better as individuals, communities, and as a nation. Education is the backbone of development. If we want a better future, we must fix our present system. And it starts by listening to the students, training the teachers, investing in technology, and bridging the rural-urban gap.
Let education be what it was meant to be a ladder, not a wall.
Thanks for reading. Let’s continue the conversation in the comments what’s your experience with today’s education system, and how do you think we can make it better?

The gap between the elites and survivals is alarming. Meanwhile, could they be a possible way out of this soul sucking monster called poverty?
Because if this is eliminated, I feel that the best would come to pass as everyone would opt for the best and not the available. Thanks so much for the mention.
