Dragon Delivers A Hug

Flap, flap, flap... Dragon flies and floats through the air.

I'm tired, Dragon says, I need some rest. Brother, listen, it won't be long. Are you still there? It seems like I can barely hear your voice anymore. Are you asleep? Don't worry, I'm on my way.

Home, thinks Dragon, how long ago it was, how much time has passed. Nothing seems to have changed in the red landscape, and the volcano is still alive. Strange; it feels different than when I lived here. It doesn't feel like home anymore. What would Wolf be doing, and what would Paddington be like? Would that fat bear be hunting for honey again and disturbing the bees' rest?

Dragon's stomach made a rumbling sound as she landed. The soil trembled slightly under her paws.

Hello, Volcano, I'm back. Did you miss me?

A plume of smoke came from the top and made Dragon chuckle. Volcano had not forgotten how to talk with smoke signals. She blew a few flames into the air, causing the volcano to burst out. Sparks flew around, but Dragon did not care. She was privileged by nature with armor that allowed her to withstand all natural disasters.

I'm hungry; is there anything to eat?

She thought of the canned knight; a hot dip would be welcome, but the wide area looked miserable and empty. There seemed to be little to eat. Her stomach rumbled louder than the volcano. She looked over the plain and decided to sit down to rest from the long flight. The rumbling of her stomach would stop if she concentrated on something else. Now that she thought about it, she rarely ate, yet she was still alive. Wolf and Paddington had to eat constantly- How weird, she thought, and so did Brother when he was still a little dragon.

The ground felt warm. She decided to take a nap first. It wasn't a mud bath, but it was still better than the cold cave where she had spent the past few years. Dragon fell asleep with a broad smile on her face. It had been a long flight, and this place, everything was as it had always been. Safe.
In the background, the volcano rumbled softly and sang Dragon to sleep. It watched over the lost child it had missed for so many years. Some things never change, thought the volcano towering above the landscape. It looked contentedly over the landscape that lay untouched at its feet. No human would ever set foot here, the soil would never be worked, and there would be no casualties as a result of human behaviour.

A few hours later, Dragon woke up and yawned. She looked around, somewhat confused. Where was she?
The volcano gurgled in the background and sent a few plumes of smoke into the air, making Dragon hastily get up.

Where is brother, have you seen him?

The feeling that she could no longer feel her brother was unknown to Dragon. She looked around and tried to remember the direction from which she had felt him. It was that way. The volcano answered in agreement.

Dragon set off on foot this time. There was no reason to fly in a world without people and where dragons have no enemies.

What was that? Abruptly, she stood still. Were these eggs? It looked like it. She touched one carefully, there were three of them. She dug a hole into the warm soil and rolled all three into it. It would be a delicious treat. Boiled eggs are yummy, a perfect snack.

I'll come back and pick you up later, just smother a while in the ground.

Dragon set off cheerfully, her instinct showing her the way. Brother couldn't be far. She searched around. Had he dug a hole in the ground like she had done for the eggs or gone back to the place by the waterfall? She held her head up in the air and smelled... Water!

Brother, I'm here, Dragon shouted excitedly, although there was no answer. Brother, I'm here to hug you. Sorry it took longer than expected, but here I am.

After 2 kilometers, Dragon heard the waterfall. Now she knew for sure that little brother had searched for it. The water was healing, washed away worries and was the gate to another world.

After the bare plain and the warm ground with lava, Dragon walked over rocks, and now she came to the jungle that she and Brother had explored before he had flown out.

Dragon stood still with a jerk. There was brother. He had changed. His red color had disappeared, instead, he was ... blue. Do blue dragons exist? Dragon looked thoughtfully at the pile of misery curled up between the ferns. Was that brother? She bent over the dragon that she had found and raised long ago. Brother, Brother, I'm here! Are you still so tired? Slowly, one eye opened a crack, and the blue dragon swallowed as it tried to speak.

Don't speak, it doesn't matter. I have plenty of time. You know what? I'll sit here with you as soon as I drink some water.

A claw of the blue dragon stopped Dragon as she wanted to hop away.

Don't.

His voice sounded weird but clear enough for Dragon to understand the message.

Poison...

Dragon stopped abruptly and sat down next to Brother. Had she heard correctly? Was the water poisonous, or was it the air? Brother shivered. She wrapped her body around him to give him the hug he asked for. She felt the energy from her body flow into his. If Brother is better, we eat together and have fun like before. He should live with me, it's a good idea, she thought happily. There was enough room in the cave. Wolf wouldn't mind since he often was out for a trip, and the forest was big enough for two dragons.

For a moment, she thought she heard the volcano rumble in agreement.
I found him, Dragon signaled as she held Brother tightly against her.

Sweet dream, Little Brother. I am happy I found you.

Do you know the wonderful real Carpentier (Cuban), that made me remember that style with what you wrote, of the dragons. WOW. Without words, one of the best I have read in a long time. Especially because I expected all the time, while reading, that the dragon was not going to find his brother. Every step, every action convinced me that he wasn't going to find him, he was gone forever. Then you transformed the whole story for me. He was alive. But he was on the verge of death. Great. With this ending that I couldn't intuit and that you resolved so well.

How can someone born in Switzerland with a Russian mom and French Dad be Cuban? It sounds like a fairy tale. I never read anything of him as far as I can recall.

Time for another Dragon
