Ribbon cake got it's name from the colours that it is used in making it. Food colours are added and it is also layered to make it unique. I personally do not like ribbon cakes because it is not popular here. In fact, it is this week's learning challenge that has exposed me to that name. But upon enquiries, I found out that it is a cake that is most popular in Sri Lanka. It is a special cake that is often featured in celebrations which signifies joy and happiness.

Normal cake ingredients are used like other cakes which includes among other things flour, butter, eggs, sugar, baking powder, vanilla along with icing sugar and food colours. For children, it is a delight because they will always be attracted to colours. What I personally like is the layer since when cut, it displays those colours that it is made with, adding to it's beauty.

Well, learning they say never ends. So long as it is something I can learn, I will always avail myself of the opportunity. I am grateful for this week's recipe as detailed by our teacher @m-fido in this cake challenge here.

I was able to gather all the required ingredients though it wasn't easy to be accessed within my neighbourhood.

Making the cake

With all the ingredients handy, it is time to prepare the cake in steps. Please the steps are presented below

Step 1:

I measured out the butter and put in a clean mixing bowl, then I added the required amount of sugar and mixed thoroughly to combine. I beat for a long time to get the desired texture

Step 2:

Then I broke the eggs into the mixture one after the other and whisk as I add them. After the addition of all the eggs, I continued whisking until it is properly mixed

Step 3:

It is time to add the vanilla for flavor. I measured the required amount of vanilla and added to the mixture of sugar, butter and egg and mixed thoroughly to combine

Step 4:

Next, I added baking powder into the flour, mixed well, then sieved them into the butter, sugar, egg and vanilla mixture and combined thoroughly to form the cake batter

Step 5:

At this stage, I separated the batter in 2 equal parts to enable me create the ribbon by adding the colours

Step 6:

Then I greased two baking pans with a generous amount of butter and added the two separate coloured mixture in each of them to bake separately.

Step 7:

I then preheated the oven and baked the 2 cakes at the same time for 40 minutes since my oven can accommodate both cake pans. Then it was ready

Step 8:

While the cake was being baked, I prepared the icing sugar by adding 30g of butter to a bowl and mixed thoroughly

Step 9:

Then I measured out the icing sugar and added little by little while mixing them thoroughly until all where added to achieve a motter so to speak

Then I used the icing and coated the top of the green colour until well covered

I then placed the pink colour on the green colour to form a layer which I have presented below

What difficulties did you encounter while making this recipe?

My only difficulty is sourcing the ingredients like the icing sugar, food colour. I had to pay transport to a far market to buy them since they aren't sold around. It was a challenge to until I got a friend that was going to that market who then helped me to buy them due to my busy schedule. Then whisking to get the homogeneous battery was also a challenge.

Explain the importance of each of the ingredients you used in making this cake

Flour is for structure and texture. It gives cake the framework it needs. It is also an absorbing agent in cakes, adsorbing the liquids and giving it the moisture and strength it needs.

Sugar is primarily for sweetening and flavour enhancing. But it also helps for texture, moisture retention, aeration, and tenderising of the cake.

Butter adds flavour, texture and structure

Egg provides emulsification, structure, moisture, leavening and flavour

Vanilla is for flavor enhancement, aroma and texture

Baking powder is a leavening agent, making the texture to be light and airy

Icing sugar improves texture, distributes sweetness, and in this recipe, helps to form a layer because it acts as a coating agent

Food colour is for visuals. It helps create different colours that are placed in layer forms to beautify the cake, making it attractive like a ribbon.

@damithudaya is my choice of Steemian I will like to share this ribbon cake with. This will afford us the opportunity to get to know each other better and since ribbon cake is primarily native to the people of Sri Lanka, he will also like to have a taste. But I will share a little with him only because I will like the kids to have it more. I don't know if he will accept this offer?

In conclusion, I have been able to present a step by step method of baking a ribbon cake along with the accompanying pictures for more understanding

I have also been able to explain in brief the importance of each of the ingredients used in making this ribbon cake
