Brief History

Ba'alawi is a name for the descendants of the Prophet Muhammad SAW who came from Yemen, who trace their lineage from Husein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad SAW. Indeed, historically the spread of Islam in Indonesia was initiated by the descendants of the Prophet Muhammad precisely from Hadhramaut, where the descendants of the Prophet Muhammad are often addressed as Habib.

Perhaps, to honor the sacred footsteps that have been treaded for generations from the Ba'alawi clan with a full of heavy struggle without stopping for the benefit of Islamic propagation, Habib Muhammad Bin Ahmad Al-Attas, who is known as a charismatic scholar, has the intention and built a mosque in his hometown which he named the Ba'alawi Mosque.

Inauguration Inscription of Ba'alawi Aceh Mosque

Habib Muhammad Bin Ahmad Al-Attas inaugurated the Ba'alawi Aceh Mosque on January 17, 2021 as well as holding the Great Maulid of the Prophet Muhammad at the mosque, a few hours after the event Habib Muhammad passed away, to be precise on January 18, 2021 in the early morning at his residence.

From the family's narrative, Habib Muhammad had indeed said words to the effect that “the Ba'alawi Aceh Mosque is my last ideal, after that I go home.”

To date there are 5 mosques named Ba'alawi Mosque, each of which is located in:

  1. Ba'alawi Tarim Mosque, Hadhramaut, South Yemen
  2. Ba'alawi Huraidhah Mosque, Hadhramaut, South Yemen
  3. Ba'alawi Singapore Mosque, Singapore
  4. Ba'alawi Jambi Mosque, Jambi, Indonesia
  5. Ba'alawi Aceh Mosque, Aceh, Indonesia

Building

Located in the middle of rice fields, the area belonging to the Ba'alawi Aceh Mosque is quite large which is bounded by an elegant fence, and for the mosque building itself has a simple concept by carrying out a white and green color pattern on the outside, which is the favorite color of the Prophet Muhammad SAW.

Sighting of Ba'alawi Mosque from the Road

The terrace of the mosque is often used by visitors who come from afar to sit and rest with their families, which gives freedom for anyone to relax or even enjoy a meal, the most important thing is the cleanliness of the mosque must be maintained for mutual comfort.

Entering the inside of the mosque, the atmosphere seems more colorful, although the walls still maintain the dominant white color with a slight layer of beige at the top. On the mihrab there is a touch of gold color that gives a luxurious impression and also calligraphic writing that decorates, but the most special is the metal ka'bah door ornament attached to the wall with a luminous frame line.

Colorful Ceiling

The ceiling is the most eye-catching part, with a striking play of colors, using yellow as the basis of the art, where beautifully written strands of the holy verses of the Qur'an are followed by the Asmaul Husna, arranged in red, purple and green. Right in the center is the symbol “ﷲ ﷻ” which is a praise to God, meaning Allah the Most Exalted.

Special Facilities

There is a small white building to the right of the mosque, which also has a unique dome. This is the building that covers the grave of Habib Muhammad Bin Ahmad Al-Attas, also called Gubah, which was deliberately made for visitors who want to make a pilgrimage to the Habib's grave.

Backstory

By Allah's permission, during his lifetime, many people met Habib Muhammad Bin Ahmad Al-Attas with a bottle of mineral water with the aim of the water to be prayed for by Habib, people hope and believe that with the intermediary of prayer water from Habib, when drunk it can bring goodness to the person who drinks it, for example to cure illness.

Based on the phenomenon of blessing, when during the construction of the mosque, Habib once prayed in the water tub where the men were ablution, then with an analogy of the water tub as also a container of water prayed for by Habib, which means that the water in it also contains blessings, so that many people also want to take the water. To make it easier for visitors, the mosque officials deliberately made a pipeline directly from the tub to the jug.

General Facilities

Just like mosques in general, especially with the status of this mosque which is very familiar, it is well prepared with facilities such as:

My Experience: Feeling the Spirit of Worship

The five daily prayers in congregation are of course well scheduled and performed at the Ba'alawi Aceh Mosque, which is always crowded with many pilgrims from the eastern region of Aceh Province. I personally have visited this mosque three times, and feel the aura of worship that is very peaceful, with also the hospitality of the mosque administrators who are families and descendants of Habib Muhammad Bin Ahmad Al-Attas who make all visitors feel comfortable, I see many other worship activities carried out such as religious studies that are open to the general public and tahfidz education for children.

I concluded that the Ba'alawi Aceh Mosque is a place for Muslims to pick up blessings and knowledge, which also proves that something built with sincere intentions will benefit many people.
