The University's Of Uyo Rich History and Landmark With Captivating Artistic Display
INTRODUCTION/HISTORY |
---|
The region where the University of Uyo is sited is in the heart of City also known as Plaza. This university has always been a place where academic excellence is displayed. Comparing it to the state university, it has been in existence for decades, precisely established in 1991, which mobilised it to move from a state university to a federal institution. As I strolled through this place on a Saturday for this atlas challenge, I captured old, erected structures with architectural and artistic landmarks, which surprised me. Every faculty and department has a sculpture that, on reflection, best describes the place.

In 1983, the University of Uyo was founded as Unicross when Cross River State was the encumbrance of Akwa Ibom State. After a separation by General Ibrahim Babangida and placing Uyo as the capital city in 1987, the university was later renamed to the University of Uyo in 1991 as a federal university.
The perm site of this university is along Nwaniba, and this is the town campus in the very city's heart, Uyo.
They provide quality education and offer admission to every tribe across Nigeria. The first vice chancellor was Prof. Fola Lasisi, and this was as a result of the late education adoption in Akwa Ibom State. Currently, all vice chancellors are from the university's state, and the university currently has a quota to admit over 40,000 students every year.
Like I said, I will be giving a brief description of most places on the basis of those sculptures that provide artistic beauty.
GEOGRAPHY FACULTY |
---|
This building is as vast as the world map. The architectural design can tell you how old this building is. This is a three-storey building known as the geography block. Beside it is a large tree; the trunk is an indication that it has been there for ages. It is a place where apparatus like the globe and the atlas are well analysed, geographic location and its like. From the side view, it holds a unique artistic sculpture, a hand with a key, representing guidance, navigation and direction.
PHARMACY BLOCK |
---|
Unlike the perm site, the buildings in town campus are almost closely parked due to the large number of departments. Another building here is the pharmacy block; the architectural design looks a bit modernised but doesn't hold much difference. My focus is on the sculpture that gives this place an artistic description, a raised stair in a cylindrical form that has on top a mortar and a pestle, which represent the transition from traditional herbal medicine to modern medicine with the same use of herbal natural products.
NYONG ESSIEN LIBRARY |
---|
All sculptures are project work from students in the faculty of art, and they all align with every department's objectives. Next is the university's library, which is distant from lecture halls. What draws my attention, apart from its modern library facilities, is another sculpture which was crafted using metal strips and junk; you can see an eagle on top of a lantern. This signifies that with burning our candles by reading, we can attain any height, just like an eagle.
EDUCATION FACULTY BLOCK |
---|
Another is the new education block for students from the faculty of education; it is built in a duplex form and an artistic work tagged Joblessness by Etukudoh Isaac. It is an artwork that signifies that education has been a building block for innovations and creativity and, in this course, provides job opportunities for people.
The school environment has so much serenity, and labourers are working to clear down those spearhead grasses that seem to cover some parts. Big trees are planted all over the place to add beauty.
MINI STADIUM/SPORTING GROUND |

Another place of beauty is the mini stadium constructed for inter-facility and departmental football gameplay. We have the lawn tennis court with a wired mesh like a fence to prevent the tennis ball from leaving the range. We also have the basketball pitch, which has been renovated with a new pitch painting.
OPENING/CLOSING HOURS |
---|
The university premises have never been locked up; it's a busy place that's always open, but offices for administrative activities are open from Mondays to Fridays unless on public holidays.
I would love to see @bossj23 @vickmoon and @dexysluz participate in this challenge

The artistic display in the University of Uyo is something that should be studied as a course as every sculpture speaks details and resonates with the buildings its attached to. Thanks for the invite and for taking us on a tour in this University.
Note: You forgot to include the location code on Steem-atlas and the Google maps link to show the location of this place and you can include the school's website as well.
