The Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources is a research institute belonging to the Public Technology Research Association that conducts geological surveys and research on natural resources in the country, surrounding seas, and overseas.
It was established as a geological research institute under the Japanese Government-General of Korea in April 1918. After liberation, it was renamed to the current name in January 2001 after passing through the Central Geological Mineral Research Institute (1945), the National Geological Survey (1961), the National Geological Mineral Research Institute (1973), the Resource Development Institute (1976) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the Korea Institute of Power Resources (1981) under the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Korea Resource Institute (1991) under the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Korea Resource Institute (1999) under the Public Technology Research Institute under the Prime Minister's Office.
The purpose of the institute is to contribute to the development of science and technology, the development of the national economy, and the improvement of the quality of life of the people through geological surveys and research on natural resources in the country, surrounding seas, and overseas. To this end, we aim to become a leading research institute that contributes to the preservation of a living and breathing global community through the correct understanding of the Earth and the efficient use of finite resources.
Its main functions include ① land and seabed geological research and geological science research, ② research on exploration, development, utilization, and recycling of natural resources, ③ research on exploration, development, and conservation of groundwater resources, ④ research on geological disasters including earthquakes, ⑤ geological environmental conservation and underground space research, and ⑥ geological science and informatization of natural resources and policy research.
The affiliated geological museum was established as a geological sample museum in 1993 and reopened as the current museum in November 2001 to build a systematic and comprehensive geological museum. It is 2,500㎡ and displays various minerals, rocks, dinosaurs, geological structures, and geological specimens.
