Bill withers said he wrote the song "lean on me"
Because he was on a church picnic.They went swimming and he was drowning.All the church people refuse to jump in to save him, though some could swim.They watch him drowning and they taught they could be drown too if they jump in to save him.

To Bill great surprise it was a neighborhood bad boy that took the chance on the suitation and jump in without a taught to save him
That incident taught him that there is a big difference between RELIGION and GODLINESS
