Animal Activities #15
Hello everyone, I hope you're all doing well today and great too. I'm fine too and wish to extend my warm greetings to @xkool24 for this weekly Animal activities. The animal today I'm introducing is Sheep.
A domesticated cud-chewing mammal that farmers rear for purpose of milk, meat, hides and wool. It is similar to a goat but it stockier and has divergent horns, while the males don't have beards like the goats. Sheep's have shorter tails. A sheep outer coat, in wild species has a hair form with under coat of fine wool.
A female sheep is called Ewe, while the males are called Rams, the offsprings are called Lambs. The mature sheep has a weight of about 35 kg to 180 kg. There's regurgitation of food and chewing the cud with a sheep, which enables it's stomach compartments to digest grasses and herbage thoroughly. There are more than two hundred (200) species/breeds of sheep.
Sheeps are very valuable in terms of domestic animals(tamed for use by humans). In all the continents, sheeps are found, except in Antarctica. Most of them live in high and dry areas. For a big horned sheep, the horn can be more than a meter length wise.
Sheeps eat plants and grasses also. They move(graze) in flocks or large groups. The meat of adults sheep is known as Mutton, while the meat of a younger sheep is known as lamb. Its milk is used to make cheese. The Merino and Rambouillet sheeps are specifically raised for wool purposes.
Certain sheep breeds perform and live better in different climate, management and agro-economical conditions, while certain breeds depending on the production systems can fit pasture or grain-based production system.
Other usefulness of a sheep includes;
They are used as tools to manage weeds and increase sustainability.
Their wool are used for making clothes, carpets, blankets and other textiles.
The young ones are kept as pets for children's learning.
Their products like yarn, felt are used in production of glue and asphalt binders.
Sheep's are used in scientific research.
I invite @josepha and @zory23 and @pandora2010 to join this contest.
