Many cultures in the globe makes use of Proverbs which are words with wisdom and they present it in different means like playlet and other forms. I am from Akwa ibom state in Nigeria and they have different cultures with different Proverbs which has always been heart capturing and mind blowing when said.

As a native of Annang, Efik, oro and Ibibio culture, I have heard and learnt several idioms and Proverbs from this culture. They're also funny expressions made using our language which is presented in cultural events. I was able to watch some of these presentations last year and I learnt a lot from it.

I will be listing and explaining some cultural expressions and Proverbs using our local language then make an interpretation and an explanation in English.

Adia ñkpọ aduma abenne anyen ke enyọñ

"If you eat what belongs to the thunder then you need to look up"

This is a powerful proverb that delivers a very important lesson. Note that the words in this case are like representations that could have different meanings and views form different people. In this context;

  • if you Eat : in this particular context, it means taking what does not belong to you, or taking things illegally.
  • What belongs to the Thunder : as it is said, it is something that is not yours then at the same time taking things from a powerful or forbidden source.
  • You need to look up : This shows that there is a consequence to your actions and you should be ready to face anything that comes.

Generally, it means that if you take things that doesn't belong to you then you should be prepared to face whatever consequences that will come your way. Just like fraud, you take money from people illegally which will result in your arrest then you will face the consequences.

Lesson : Avoid taking things that are not yours, don't take illegal actions which at the end will result to problems. This Proverb teaches us to stay away from illegal things, we should be careful of our actions and if we do we should be prepared to dance to the beat.

Ayé ubók yàk afón, asî dia nkpó ye mme Edidem

"He who washes his hands well, eats with the kings."

The washing of hands in this context means, mending your ways by being honest, loyal, respectful and other values, now eating with kings stands for high places of honor.

If you amend your ways and act right, you will always be called up to high places, you will be given respect, because they trust your value.

Lesson : In life always live right, amend your ways, be honest, be loyal. All these values are noticed gradually by people, so you need to act right all the time to be trusted with big contracts and jobs.

Ufân akén inúa, ado akén inúa

"The friend of a talkative/gossiper is a gossiper"

This Proverb simply concur with the saying, by their friend you shall know them. It is easy to judge a person by who they walk with. A billionaire will mostly be seen with rich friends, a thief will also be seen with thieves. So, from the saying, a friend to a talkative is a talkative because they roll together.

Lesson: Know who you call your friend or who you keep company with, because by their friends you shall know them.

Eto idàha ikpón ikabpa Akài

A tree cannot make a forest

The tree in this description can mean anything, but it mainly talks about team work, to achieve huge goals we need to work as a team. Like what we were taught in an engineering hangout, Team work is the key to success, we need people to carry out the tasks.

Another typical example is a football game, a player can't do all the tasks, the team needs a keeper, a winger and other positions to make the team, one single player can do all the work of the team so, to get that goal we need to come together.

  • T : Together
  • E : Everyone
  • A : Achieves
  • M : More

Lesson : sometimes we think we can achieve certain goals by ourselves, but all we need is support, it can be emotional, physical or mental support from friends or colleagues.

Sort:

This team acronym that together everyone achieves more reminds me a story of farmer and his sons who taught lesson of unity to his sons...overall moral of story was similar to your idiom which is Union is strength so I have a believe at this thing that the more you will give importance to your relationships and the more you will stick with them before starting everything the more you will be strong in society and hence the more you will get success
I really like your video...it's inspiring

"The friend of a talkative/gossiper is a gossiper"

Ahhh this one hits home. It just like saying a wise man in the midst of five foolish people is the sixth foolish person and vice-versa. Relationship indeed matter and we should be careful of who will relate with as it could define our reputation .
