The Pulse of Rural Agriculture

Man is a testimony of resilience and survival as well as hope in this small-time farmlands in the middle of the heart of most rural communities. And this is not only a maize field; it is a reference to life. Every ear of corn marching skywards is an echo of labour, nursing and belief in natural cycle. As the ears of maize gradually grow, here the evidence of struggles that farmers have to endure daily can be noticed as well.

On a closer examination, the evidence of pests attacks on the leaves appears, namely, holes, tears, and yellowing of the leaves. Such minor wounds are clues as to the presence of caterpillars or beetles which are quietly fattening on the crops, and that farming is a battlefield between man and insect. Under the tall stalks of maize are a mixture of weeds competing in terms of nutrients and room. Their presence is an indicator that it is time to weed but it is also an indicator of how persistent nature may be after all.

In spite of the challenges associated with this field, it has potential. The maize fruit is setting and, with due attention-prompt weeding and pest control and possibly organic manure it can still do well. It is also the core of rural African food security. These local farms sustain households, local economies and are the answer to community nutrition.

It is primeval yet motivating to observe how the food is capable of growing once buried in the earth using basic equipment and perseverance. It might not be a trading plantation but to the farmer it is gold. The discipline narrates not only about crops but also tradition and hardship and hope. It also indicates the necessity in supporting agriculture - training in pest control, availability of fertilizers and improved seed types.

This maize garden can be able to increase its output by two folds with basic attention and minimum input. May this little chunk of land serve as a reminder to us of the strength of farming to profoundly change lives one stalk at a time.
