Agriculture and Me – This Week’s Personal Experience
Again this week, study about agriculture turned out to be a big blessing in my life. I personally was a beneficiary, of the consumption and even sale of agricultural commodities, in small scale of course, a venture that only added to my personal satisfaction and even financial needs.
The first step in my backyard garden was picking fresh vegetables on Monday of the week. These are tomatoes, okra, scent leaves and garden eggs. Availability of these organic and fresh items saved me of the trouble of spending money at the market place. The tomatoes and okra were used in the making of a very tasty soup that could last two days, and the scent leaves brought a greater aroma and taste in my food.
On a midweek, I loaded a couple of baskets of garden eggs and pepper and went off to the local market. It was not a huge sale but I made sufficient income to cover some of the minor household needs. This has reminded me that farming regardless of the scale can sustain our lives but as long as it is well established. It is the pride of selling it being what I have grown. It made me feel like a proud and inspired person to widen my activity.
Along with this, I assisted a neighbor to make cassava into garri. This experience has made me understand the importance of teamwork in farming. So we roasted the garri after peeling, washing, grating and pressing the cassava, and this we divided among us. It was good to know that I also helped in a positive thing and yet I would go home to feed my family.
So agriculture to me is not just only farming it is survival, business and life style. Every week adds another page as it is fresh food, minor income or mastering of an activity via the processing. It was an enriching week and I am thankful of the opportunities that agriculture still provides.
