Diary farming is an agricultural practice that is focused on raising animals for the production of dairy products. An example of Such animals is a cow raised for milk production. Dairy farming generates income for the agricultural sector and is a source of nutrition.

Dairy farming can start with a few animals and grow into a large operation. Its product is in high demand as little children, especially, need dairy products for healthy growth.

Discuss on the Types of Diary Farming

Dairy farming comes in different types, depending on which you can afford or your choice which includes

• Large scale;
  In large-scale dairy farming, the aim is to produce a large quantity of milk for sale. It requires a large land space where lots of animals are bred with advanced technology to make the work easier and properly. This type of farmer requires lots of capital to put in and it also generates lots of income as its sale goes as far as the international market.

• Small scale;
  This farming requires few animals, it is sometimes owned or managed by a person, a few persons or a family and its production are not much.

• Organic;
  This is a type of dairy farming that is solely based on natural practices, on the farm, on both the animal and its environment, it does not apply any chemicals such as pesticides, fertilisers, etc. or artificial practices such as treating animals naturally.

Challenges in Dairy Farming

Like every other farming practice challenges affect dairy farming which include

• Climate change
  It is one of the challenges that affect dairy farming. Climate change affects cow health and productivity. For instance, cold weather affects cows' health if they are not provided with appropriate shelter and feeding. Hot weather also affects cows as they become dehydrated, exposing them to lots of diseases, which leads to a low production of milk. Heavy rainfall also affects their pasture as they everywhere will be muddy which is a main cause of diseases like foot rot.

• Changes in market price:
  Changes in sales of goods in the market affect farmers. When prices become so low, it makes the farmer lose money he has invested in feeding and taking care of the cow, as all he has spent is supposed to be recovered from his sales. This poses a challenge for dairy farmers as the market price is not steady.

• Adhering to regulations
  There are Rules and regulations on maintaining a suitable environment for dairy farming, feeding of the animals, and the health care of the animals that a dairy farmer is to stick to; when these rules are not kept, there are consequences. When these rules are not adhered to, it becomes a challenge.

• Pollution
  Polluted air, water or environments affect the health of animals in the farm, because this contamination gives room for ill health to the animal, leading to low productivity.

Dairy farming is of great importance as it provides health-beneficial dairy products in all seasons, creates job opportunities, and generates revenue.
