We all need Agriculture for healthy survival

Agriculture is a great gift of nature to man, packed with so many benefits. It's that season of the year when fresh corn is being eaten, we see corn sellers on almost every street, some cook theirs while others roast, and people buy according to their choices. This corn could be eaten with coconut or African pear (ube).

So I got fresh corn from the market, as we are still in the season of corn. It is cheaper and larger in quantity when it's bought from farmers. I also bought the African pear (Ube) which is a delicious combination to enjoy it with.

Both the corn and African Pear have healthy nutritional benefits when consumed in moderation, and it happens that they are both in season this period, so I decided to have some.

When I got home, I cooked the corn in a pot filled with water that was at the same level as the corn in the pot for about 30minutes. While the corn was boiling, I added a little salt to the corn and allowed it to cook until it was tender. I brought the cooked corn out from the pot to a tray.

After that, I boiled water which I poured into a bowl with my African pear and covered it for about 3minutes. After these 3minutes, the pear became tender. I also brought the pears out of the hot water into the tray, to cool them off a bit and enjoy them with my family.

Agriculture has always provided us with healthy foods, so we should be encouraged to invest more in agriculture to ensure that there is sufficient healthy food at every season. We should take advantage of seasonal agricultural products and enjoy their nutritional benefits.

Also, consuming our local agricultural products gives us that connection to our traditional culture. I have a relative who lives outside the country. When we talk on the phone, she complains that she has missed all our local agricultural products, even though some of these foods are being sent to her, but she doesn't get them fresh as we do over here.

More so, with my knowledge on the importance of Agriculture, I have begun a little garden in my home, where I have planted varieties of crops in smaller portions for a start.

Although agricultural practices come with several challenges, it requires finding the root of any problem in the farm and getting a solution to it, when this solution is properly implemented, you will get bountiful yields.
