Agriculture and me always walking together, sometimes I don’t even notice how deep it is till one week pass and I look back. This week was full of small blessings that came out from the soil, from the sweat of hand, from food on the plate and even from small coins that help me smile.

On Monday, the day begin with yam I dug out some days back. I slice it rough, fry it with palm oil and little salt. Not perfect round shapes, but taste sweeter than anything money can buy outside. I chew it slow, feeling the warmth in my belly. I tell myself in thought, “sine agricultura, nihil est,” because truly no life if not for farming. Without that yam, I would be hungry.

Tuesday not much different but something special happen. I carry small basket of tomatoes to the roadside market. It was not many, maybe just enough to fill a pan. I stood there waiting, sun burning my neck, but people still came. One woman bought three handful, another man buy some for stew. Before I knew, basket empty, and I hold few naira in my pocket. I felt proud walking back home. Agriculture gave me soap money that day.

Rain poured on Wednesday, heavy and fast, and my spirit dance because soil needed it. I took maize seeds from old tin and rushed to backyard. My hand sinking in mud, I press seed deep with finger. I laugh when mud splash on my leg. My neighbor pass and wave. I tell him “natura dat, agricola colit,” though he just smile, maybe not understanding Latin. Still, I knew nature gave and I just follow.

Thursday long but happy. Cassava processing day. Together with my neighbor, we peel, wash, press and roast. The smell of roasting garri rising in air, smoke filling our eyes yet our mouths never stop talking. We chew roasted groundnuts while waiting for garri to dry. It felt like family even though not related by blood. Food is work, but food also a bridge that join people.

By Friday, I look at vegetable patch. Green leaves shining after rain. I cut ugu leaves carefully, wash them in bowl, and cook soup with crayfish and oil. The pot bubbling, the smell filling whole room. When we sat down to eat, I look at everyone’s face bright with joy. That moment I whisper, “panem et circenses.” Bread, play, laughter, soup, everything mixed. Agriculture not only feeding, it is happiness I see in people eyes.

Saturday loud and busy. Palm fruits I harvested last week finally ready for pressing. I take them to small mill, where engine sound growl like angry beast. Oil dripping red and hot into container, shining like treasure. I sell half on the spot, kept some for home cooking. Holding money in hand, I think of all the small needs I can cover. Again agriculture pay me like a silent worker that never complain.

Sunday soft and peaceful. I boil corn, fresh and juicy, steam rising into evening air. Sitting outside under mango tree, I chew each grain slowly. Time stand still, the world felt simple. No fancy meal, no stress, just me and agriculture together in quiet moment.

When I look back now, every day carried agriculture inside. It was not just about money, though money help. It was not only about food, even though food save life. It was also about connection, the way I laugh with neighbor, the way I feel dirt on hand, the way I smell smoke rising from fire. It is a circle that keep turning, and I stand inside it.

Agriculture made me remember childhood when my mother used to say, “if you put seed inside ground, one day you harvest more than you plant.” That truth still walking with me today. I sell small, I eat plenty, I share some, and I keep going.

This week show me clearly, without agriculture my life will be empty. Every step, from yam in the morning, tomato sales in the afternoon, cassava roasting with neighbor, down to the corn on Sunday evening, remind me how close it is. Agriculture is not distant, it is in my stomach, in my hand, in my laugh, in my pocket. “Agricultura vita est.” Agriculture is life.
