Steem4nigeria Accelerator Contest Week 99: Over Indulgence in Consumables-(Gluttony)
While most of us associate gluttony with consuming food and drink, it can apply to almost anything, whether that is power, ownership, social position, and even attention.
One can recognize the company of greedy ones by many signs. They're usually not happy with what they do have. Like someone who’s always wanting more, never feeling like it’s enough, and who has a habit of not caring too much about the rights of other people if there’s something in it for them. They may also have imbalance in their lives, such as work for money keeping them away from family and health. The greedy tend to heap their plate high in social settings or hogs the resources.
You know, gluttony doesn’t have to be about food and drink. Someone may be greedy for power — not be willing to share roles, always be the center of the stage. Then there is a greed for recognition, where somebody has to always hear something nice and find it impossible to see the negative. Which just shows that gluttony is more a state of mind, or an attitude toward the world, than it is actually putting things into your body.
Is gluttony natural? Some experts say the urge to stock up is rooted in survival of the fittest. But when this appetite is not managed, it may become negative. So although it may be a product of nature, gluttony is controllable. Man has reason and moral virtues which allow him to see the edges and distinguish between what is due and what is not.
For those who feel stuck in gluttony, it is crucial to begin with self-awareness. It may begin with personal reflection, life review and prioritization. Thankfulness and generosity are also very useful teaching tools. Other times sharing our stories with a counselor or even safe person can bring new insights.
Gluttony is an attitude that takes a number of expressions, not all of which have to do with food. It’s a condition that can be managed with self-awareness, good intentions and half-decent effort at living simply. Gaining control over gluttony means not just more balanced lives but also wiser, kinder people.
