The energy in my neighborhood has felt palpable in recent weeks. This is because the residents were working together for the Independence Day of Indonesia. This is an annual event everyone looks forward to because it is not just a cleanup of the environment, it is a day to get together as citizens of a community.

Throughout the morning, from 07.00 WIB that morning, the citizens had come in dribs to collect at the RT corridor. Some brought brooms, hoes, paint for walls and even lawn mowers. We cleaned gutters and trimmed feral plants as a team, repainting the fence and gate that mark the entrance to our housing complex. The warm, laughing atmosphere seemed familiar even though some of us saw one another sporadically—due to daily responsibilities.

Nor were the children any less excited. They cleaned up trash, planted flowers in little pots and even practiced for the competitions there will be next week. Some mothers served up basic food to eat, warm sweet tea and fried snacks, while others got to work painting the walls red and white.

One of the most emotional moments was when Mr. Rudi, the oldest resident in our RT, said a few words. It was the nation’s cultural heritage, he said, tobastates together and cooperative. His words caused all of those who were present to pause and think for a moment.

Another aspect of mutual assistance this week was a social activity, in the form of a collection of donations for residents who were ill and in need of assistance. Residents were quick to offer money, food and even warm clothes they had at home. This just shows how we still have caring and empathy in our neighborhood.

I think things such as such not only helps the environment look better but also develops better relations in a society that is now becoming more and more self-absorbed. I’m proud to live in a place where the value of being “together” has not become completely extinct. Perhaps this spirit will be preserved to hand down to successive generations.
