My Neighborhood Watch #102 - Reporting Events Around us

The hood has had a lot going on the past couple of days. The atmosphere is more vibrant as it aligned with school holidays and the weather is fairly good… not too hot not to raining. There are many kids who romp along the narrow lanes of the village, running and laughing with other kids. Plastic ball soccer or playing the bicycle around the village are common sights which generate a cosy atmosphere.

But on the other hand, well gosh darn it, kids aren’t the only ones with busy lives. “In the last few days people worked together to clear the gutters and ditches along the main road of the village. This work is performed normally every two months and especially before the rainy season as a way to avoid premature flooding, which takes place when the canal blockages are partial. Getting along with the others is this hot because everyone is working together, making jokes and each bringing some snacks from their home to share when the work is finished.

In addition, in our neighborhood mosque, a short-term Islamic boarding school program for children during school holidays has just started. Every morning, the children come with enthusiasm, wearing their koko shirts or mukena, bringing notebooks, and sitting cross-legged listening to the lectures from the ustaz. It teaches the kids right from a religious perspective and it helps improve brotherhood and getting the kids to be more disciplined in life in younger years.

In the afternoon, a group of housewives takes their free time to sit together at the guard post, creating handicrafts from plastic and scrap cloth. The products are then used to decorate the house or sold as a lot. This routine also serves as somewhere among them to confide and / or share news.

Life in my neighborhood is simple, for sure, but colorful and united. In a busy world this is a little oasis of family life; a place where perhaps the values of working together, caring for one another, belonging to one another are still cherished.
