Steem4nigeria Accelerator Contest Week 93: Humility
In a world where we often celebrate self-promotion and assertion, humility leads our interactions and the design of our characters as quiet strength. This reflection deals with the diverse nature of humility, the study of its meaning, misunderstandings, and the profound impact it has on our lives and our relationships.
Humility is the attribute of not seeing yourself as equal with others, but even seeing yourself as less than others respecting others, but not diminishing your self esteem. It promotes openness, willingness to learn and get ideas.
While most people interprete quietness as being humble, it doesn't necessarily denote that all quiet people are humble, some quiet people are even the most dangerous of all people we have in the world; the freaks, some of them are proud and obnoxious. Even the most outspoken ones, may even be more humble than the quiet ones. This shows that true humility surpasses one demeanor, it is the attribute and actions that matters.
Gratitude: A humble person often shows appreciation for every little act of kindness shown, prompting more of the same.
Caring: They care about the situation of others and help where they can.
Openness to correction: they easily accept correction when they are wrong, without arguing; they are open to criticism.
They have a self-oriented mindset: They help others without seeking recognition or announcing it to everyone, but remain quiet about it.
The aforementioned attributes build trust and promote true relationships.
What I do admire about humble individuals is their authenticity and honesty, they are confident, they do not need validation from society. Their willingness to admit to correction without getting angry demonstrates strength, not weakness. They try every within their power to create an avenue where everyone can be heard fairly.
Proud people often display annoying behaviour; looking down on people, often disrespecting people feeling themselves as superior to others, they are unwilling to acknowledge others contribution, seeing their statement as final. Such characteristics can create barriers, impair communication, start conflict and breed resentment.
I try in every possible way to embody humility as I am open to correction, learning and value the contribution of others. I recognise that I am not an island, so I value any interaction for growth. Even though there are times when, pride might kick in I try as much as possible to work on myself to change the way I approach matters.
Humility is very important, it is a way of life that improves our lifestyle and interactions with society. By embracing humility, we open ourselves to learning, interactions, getting new ideas that may impact our decision making and forge our future endeavours.
