The Butterfly Effect is one interesting movie that would make you wonder if it is right to mess with time, even when a loved one is involved.
Overview |
---|
It is a story about Evan. A child raised by just his mom, who suffers black out from when he was taken to a friend's house, a person the mom felt she could trust her child with for a while, especially since she wanted her son to experience what it meant to be around a dad, as his was unfortunately in confinement.
However, Evans friend's (Kayleigh and Tommy) unfortunately had a twisted man as a father who thinks it is okay to use children to shoot adult related scenes. Young Evan's problem started here,as he can no longer remember what happened during the shoot.
Evan continues having this black out . His concerned mom takes him to a psychologist, as she didn't want Evan to end up as his father. Apparently, his dad suffered from the same condition. The psychologist then suggest that Evan starts writing everything that happens in a journal. His mom also had to move him to a new environment, hoping it would help him stop having this blackout .
Sad Evan left his friend Kayleigh behind with her abusive father, whose behavior not only affects Kayleigh, but made Tommy into a little monster. Tommy was so bad that, he motivated the putting of an explosive in a neighbor mailbox, which lead to her demise along with her baby.
A few years into Evans youth,he decided to read his journals, and makes a discovery. Just by reading his journals he could go back in time. He especially tries to undo the events that happened when Kayleigh's dad traumatized them as kids.
He however makes matters worse, because, with every change he makes , a friend's life takes a wrong turn. By telling Kayleigh's dad not to do the evil thing he was about to do to him and Kayleigh, and to rather discipline his son Tommy instead, Kayleigh got spared all the trouble, her life turned out well.
In Evans new reality, he wakes up to a world where Kayleigh is his girlfriend, their life is perfect, he has the right friends, they are happy. However, Tommy was treated so bad growing up, he started indulging in bad things and ended up in prison.
All is going well ontill Tommy gets out of prison and attacks him for dating his sister. He and Tommy get into a huge fight and he accidentally kills Tommy and ends up in Prison.
In prison he asks for his journal again and goes back in time once more . This time he goes to the scene where Tommy burns his dog for kissing his sister. He gives Lenny , his friend a sharp steel and asks him to cut the rope which Tommy tied his dog in. And in a twist of events Lenny instead uses the steel to stab Tommy, which leads to Tommy being dead,Lenny in Confinement, and even Kayleigh's life doesn't go well as well. She becomes a bitter person, who lives an immoral and reckless life.
He goes back in time again and tries to stop their neighbor from approaching the mailbox, but he was now the one in danger. He was right in front of the explosion and he ended up waking up to a reality where he had no hands and he was confined to a wheelchair.
This reality was the worse for him,as he had to depend on his friends this time. Lenny and Kayleigh were now dating. Tommy was a devote Christian. It seemed everyone else was happy in that reality except him. His mom had lung cancer, she had picked up the bad habits from being depressed with what happened to him. Asides the journal he wrote before the accident he didn't have current journal because he had no hands to write them.
Sad reality, everyone is happy asides him. He couldn't take it. He goes back again, this time not because others were sad, but, because he couldn't stand not having Kayleigh by his side.
An unfortunate twist of events occurs when he tries to blow up Kayleigh's dad but accidentally kills Kayleigh. This wipes her existence. It was so bad he had to be held in an assylum.
He is told by his psychologist that he never wrote any journal because he was always sad and guilty.
Conclusion |

A rather tragic end. Evan realises he can't play God. He can't have it all . He had to make the hardest choice. Evan steals, the keys to where the videos from his birth were kept in the hospital, locks himself up, projects the video, watches it, focuses on the scene and goes all the way back to the beginning.
He thought if he never existed, no one will be hurt, Kayleigh would be alive. He then uses his umbilical cord to strangle him to death as a foetus.
