"SLC-S25/W6 | Community World Tour: Idiomatic Expressions & Proverbs"
Introduction
In my culture, we believe that no matter how damaged the past may be, there is still room for new life. One proverb that carries this truth deeply is:
“Even broken roots can grow a new tree.”
Local Version (Yoruba): “A kì í fi ìjẹ̀kù àti ìparun sọ pé igi ò ní tún dà”
This video is my interpretation of that wisdom. It speaks to anyone who has ever lost something, felt forgotten, or had to rebuild after being torn apart. It’s not just a performance — it’s a reflection of something I’ve lived through of something we all have lived through in one way or another in different areas of life.
The Message Behind the Proverb
This saying reminds us that pain is not the end. Our roots—our past, our struggles—may be cracked, but they’re still connected to life. Growth can still happen. Not in the same way, not in the same shape, but in a new and powerful form.suffering is not the end , but that ability of standing up strong is what this proverb talks about.
I chose to express this through a short animated video, using simple but symbolic visuals and a deeply personal voice-over. The tree in the animation represents all of us fragile yet capable of rising again.
Full voice over script
The said I was broken,
That nothing good could grow from what I’ve been through,
But even broken root can grow a new tree,
This is for the ones who were abandoned, betrayed,or bruised
Yet still found a way to bloom,
You are not your past,
The pain didn’t end you,
It planted you.
Final Thoughts
This proverb is more than just a line from tradition it’s a truth I carry.
If you’ve ever felt like you were too far gone to heal, too broken to grow this is for you.
Or you ever thought of giving up, just know there’s always a room to heal and grow.
Because the truth is:
Even broken roots can grow a new tree.
And you are living proof of that.
