Did You Know?
Introduction |
---|
Hi lovers of history, it's your friend again coming to you with historical events and facts. I welcome you to a fresh edition of your favourite content on Steem4Nigeria. Did You Know?
Last week I concluded the series on slavery and the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.
It's another week, and I'm bringing you a fresh edition with important historical insight to look into. Thursday last week was 1st May, which is usually celebrated as Workers' Day, also called Labour Day.
International Worker's Day Celebration |
---|
Did you know that the International Worker's Day was declared to mark a general demonstration and strike by workers for 8 hours work a day and better working conditions that took place in America in 1886? Not to forget the killings of workers for protesting in 1890 by the police in America on the same 1st May. All these events took place because employees were generally badly treated by their employers, working under very harsh conditions and poor working environments.
For all the strike actions, protests and killings of workers, the International Worker's Day, otherwise known as International Labour's Day, was declared on 1st May 1889 in Paris and was later recognised in 1890/91 in many other places. With that declaration, the workers' rights were recognised, and working conditions were readjusted for workers in their workplaces.
Facts
International Worker's Day is being celebrated widely today. Workers now work 5 days a week and enjoy many other incentives. That's because many people laboured, some died on the course just for workers/labourers to enjoy all the work benefits they're enjoying today.
