What is Godfatherism?

Godfatherism is a political arrangement in which some powerful and influential citizen called godfather relies on his/her wealth, relations or authority to assist an individual in securing a political spot. The godson in turn is supposed to be loyal and listen to the directions of the god father and in most cases take the interests of god father amid the needs of the people.

Such practice is very widespread throughout the world and more so in areas where there is a high prevalence of corruption. True democracy may be hampered by Godfatherism, as merit cannot bring the preferred leaders to the power of people, but the influence will do it. It has a tendency of resulting in bad governance, non-responsiveness, and power abuse since those elected can answer to their godfathers rather than the citizens.

Well, I have been a witness to Godfatherism second-hand, and it was frustrating yet informative. In a case between two local communities one of the local community tried to discourage a very respected youth with good plans and ideas to contest since he did not have the support of a strong political figure. In its place, the position was given to a lesser experienced person with powerful godfather. Merit had nothing to do with the system but loyalty and control. With time, such a leader would not be able to make his own decisions and he would always do what he is told by the godfather. It showed the extent to which Godfatherism is hurtful to real leadership and development. It denies reasonable voices and keeps power limited in the hands of the minority which, in some cases, proves against the people.

What do u think of people who are struggling from scratch without Godfathers ?

I admire those individuals who are fighting to make ends meet without god fathers. One needs fearlessness, will power and faith in himself to move on without great support. These people resort to hard work, talent and endurance as they move ahead despite the system appearing to work against them. It tends to experience more difficulties, time wastage and rejection, yet the experience makes them strong and tough.

Self-made people unlike the handpicked or those made to the front by the influence, attain their success by the merit. They are motivating set of stories since they are talks of how one can ascend through honesty and diligence. They are the real heroes of the society and should get more credit, encouragement and a chance to lead and leave legacy.

Based on the above story, it appears that the Cabin company might be in big trouble should they continue using godfatherism based on their business deals instead of merit and innovation. When the company is led by the loyalty to the strong people over the vision and abilities, there is a chance that the company cannot grow or fit into modern requirements. This may result in low morale and failure to perform as the talented people might be sidelined. Nevertheless, when the company returns to its origins and offer chances to the industrious, worthy individuals irrespective of their allegations, it is likely to restore credibility, raise output, and finally, prevail. The next step of Cabin lies in the acceptance of justice and real leadership.
