Contest: Courtesy.
What do you understand by courtesy? Explain.
Courtesy entails being polite to other people in what we say and do. It entails considerateness, courtesy and regard to the feelings, time and space of the people. Being friendly involves remembering to say sorry, thanks, please and even saying hello. It assists in developing a non-violent and respectful atmosphere home, school, workplaces, and in society. Courtesy also involves listening as well as patience and the absence of rude or offensive wordings. Good relations are created by being courteous and impression to others. It is a simple thing that may help a lot in the way we relate with people and the treatment we give them.
Do you think courtesy is important? Should it be observed? Tell us.
Of course, it is good etiquette that must be followed. It forms the basis of proper etiquettes and courteous relationships in any community. As soon as we treat each other politely even with such a little thing as the use of the words please and thank you or giving assistants, and we make the world so much nicer and even friendlier to live in.
Rudeness leads to feelings of not being appreciated and respected by people irrespective of who they are and their position. It prevents a conflict, enhances relationships and fosters baby-faced compassion and insight. The practice of courtesy promotes peace and trust in families, schools, workplaces, and other places in the society. Deprived of it, the communication becomes cruel and life seems to be stressful. Being polite is not merely a matter of being good, though, it is something that affects our personalities and makes the world a better place. It is free but it means everythin.
Name five instances where courtesy is demanded in your culture.
My culture as an Igbo are highly courtly people who display this trait in much of their traditions. First, it is necessary to address elders with respect, which would include bowing or even kneeling in order to show sign of honor. Second, to welcome strangers the kola nut is provided and served with plenty of hospitality and courtesy.
Third, any time we speak to anyone, whether adults, other members of the community or others in the community we always have to speak in a polite manner. Fourth, in traditional ceremonies, it would be a sign of appreciation when elders are given a chance to speak first, and when they are being attentively listened. Last but not least, offering directions or even essential needs of strangers or visitors is community courtesy. These are not only good etiquettes but also reflective of the ideologies of solidarity, respect and harmony within the Igbo community and ought to be embraced at all times.
State instances where courtesy was neglected. Maybe you witnessed it or someone told you.
I have seen this young man walking into a room that has all the old people without saying anything to anyone. he just walked in and sat at the table and started pressing his phone. The elders plainly showed their anger, and one of them afterwards rebuked him. Once, another friend explained to me that she had a visitor at her home and that person had declined invitations on water and other food without giving a courtesy answer but was rude to her mother. All these were times of being rude and were considered not polite. In our society, this kind of behavior is considered negative and it might destroy relationships or create embarrassment in the society.
What is your stance when it comes to courtesy? Tell us.
I would say that the reality is that courtesy must be applied at all times regardless of circumstances. It is an indication on good upbringing, respect of others and sense of duty as an individual in the society. Courtesy is very effective to create good and healthy relations; to say good evening, use thanks, or speak kindly is not a big deal. Being nice does not mean we are weak but it means that we are mature and emotionally intelligent. It is important to be polite in any case even when with strangers, family members, or when dealing with elders. I suppose the world would be a better, more coherent, respectable and pleasant place to live, were more of the population practicing courtesy every day.
