SLC S27 Week1 - Let's Play OpenTTD
![]() |
---|
I can surely remember when i wished i could run my own transport company with trains, buses, ships, and planes? And finally here is a game call Openttd. It's my first time on the game. It’s free, fun, and works well on Android phones which I'm using. Let me share how i started this game and the five steps i followed as a beginner.
📱 Step 1: Downloading the Game and Starting the Game |
---|
I began by opening the Google Play Store app on my phone, and i searched for OpenTTD, so fast , the game pop up and i excitedly downloaded it. The installation was quick.
When i finally opened the game after downloading, I head off to the game option, which i click and chose English as the language and USD as the currency so it would be easy to understand althrough. What i observed is that the audio and the graphics are already setup on the game when i downloaded. So i skipped that part.
With biome 3 i then created a new game, saved it, and closed the app. Later, i opened it again and loaded my saved game. This showed me how to continue playing anytime without starting over again, even though my phone shuts down or i get a call.
It reminded me of when i used to play with toy trains as a child back then and now here i am ,building a whole transport world on my phone.
🧰 Task 2: Learning the Buttons and Windows |
---|
So now at the screen, there are 26 buttons. I tested three that were very useful to me and which i really understand as a beginner on this game:
🚆 Build Railway
As i study it, this particular button function,is to make train tracks. It can also use to build train stations where the trains stop. Also the train depots where trains are made or repair. And Signals to control the train movement. Surely the trains are very good for carrying a lots of things far away.
🚌 Build Road
Therefore this button is really good in making roads for buses and trucks. It can be used to create bus stops for people to enter and truck stations for the goods. And also Road depots where vehicles are made or being fixed. However the Roads are more cheaper than trains and good for short trip in the game.
✈️ Build Airport
This button function is to build airports for the planes. It can be used to build Hangars where the planes are made and repair. It Also use to make different airport sizes either small, large, or heliport. I must say that Planes are more faster for moving the goods for longer trips.
Exploring the Map window
In this window it shows a zoomed- in and out view of the entire game world. I can see:
- Towns
- Industries
- Stations
- The vehicles
- Terrain and water
This shows the whole game map from above.
And inside this window there are four main options or buttons:
🌍 Map of World
It shows:
- Towns
- Trees and rivers
- Factories and mines
- The train tracks and roads
It helps me to look around and plan where to build or create.
👁️ Extra Viewpoint
This button opens a second small window. As I see it ,this button can be use to:
- Watch one place while working in another place.
- Keep an eye on a busy station or town
- Compare two places at the same time
-Zoom in and out on different places.
It’s just like having two screens in one game like multitasking in the phone.
📦 Cargo Flow Legend
This shows how goods (like oil, coal, wood) move across the map. I see:
- Lines or arrows showing where things go
- Which places are sending or receiving cargo
- If something is stuck or not moving well
It helps to fix problems and make the transport much better for the game.
🪧 Sign List
This button shows all the signs written on the map. On my understanding these Signs are like little notes, like:
- “Build station here”
- “Coal mine”
- “Future airport”
For me to know, when I load back the game, and i can use this list to find, change, or delete the signs easily.
🏙️ Task 3: Naming My Town and Company |
---|
So now, i picked a small town with about 500 people and renamed it emishael60 town. Then I found a bigger city nearby and renamed it Abuja, just like the real capital of my country Nigeria.
Next, i created my company and called it emishael60 Transport. I chose an avatar, picked a bright red color, and placed my company office close to my town.
Finally, I saved the game as homework1 so i could continue later as demanded.
🌳 Task 4: Playing with the Land and Trees |
---|
This was the most creative part though it wasn't easy to me as a beginner. I used the Landscape tool to clear some land and used the "mounds" and "depression" tool to shaped hills and holes to write a letter "H".
I used the demolished tool to clear some place and planted different types of trees—tall ones, short ones, leafy ones—to make the area look nice.
Then through the setting button, I check for transparency and I used the Transparency tool to hide and show things like trees. This made it easier to see what was behind them and plan better.
🛢️ Task 5: Finding Resources and Industries |
---|
Finally, i have to explore the map and found resources near my town, such as:
- 🌲 Forests
- ⛏️ Coal mines
- 🛢️ Oil wells
I chose oil and looked for where it should go. While I was still searching, i finally found an oil refinery, close to me which is the place where oil is processed. And it was still in my town.
So i planned to transport oil from the wells to the refinery. This helped me understand how industries connect and how transport keeps them running.
🎉 My Final Thought on this game |
---|
For me OpenTTD is a fun and easy game once i know the basics. I started by downloading it from the Play Store, and step by step, I built my own transport company. I renamed towns, planted trees, explored industries, and learned a lot. Thoe it wasn't that easy, but I enjoy every moment in this game.
Here is the well detailed video of how I go about all the steps in this game.👇🏻
