Welcome to another beautiful contest in this lovely community. In our society, we have people that learn various trade and handiwork to earn a living. Some of these trades are required for day to day upkeep while some may take some time before becoming necessary.

One of these skills is the tailoring skill and those who do them are referred to a tailors or more currently known as fashionista and designers. Who are these people?

Who is a Tailor?

Simply put, A tailor is a person who makes the clothes that we wear. And what does this involve? It involves creating an idea of the cloth you want to sew, putting the idea into paper by sketching it. This is where the idea of a designer comes in. Using paper to form the design you have created on paper, altering and adjusting wear necessary to suit the pattern of clothing you want to sew and finally sewing it to fit the measurement, style and unique preferences of the individual.

These ones can also be cloth menders. Sometimes, our clothes might need adjustments to fit us well, these amendments are also done by a tailor. We really need them, whether we buy already made clothes or we buy the clothing materials and take it to them for sewing.

Tailors learn various methods or techniques of sewing, and work with various fabrics and clothing materials. Remember, fabrics are of different types and sometimes require specialized handling by an experienced tailor in order not to waste or destroy the fabric.

So in summary a tailor designs fabrics and works with them to fit the personal style of the wearer. He also mends and alters already sewed designs to suit the future wearer of the cloth.

Have you been disappointed by a tailor before?

Most of my experiences with tailors are full of disappointments. I have given my materials to so many tailors to make clothes for me. But it has always been difficult delivering the job at the agreed time. Sometimes, they totally forget your work and once they see you coming, they will remember and will hurriedly look for your material and pretend they were working on it.

I had an experience, where I gave a tailor my material to sew some clothes for me. He was supposed to have completed the sewing within 6 weeks. That was enough time for him. I also kept reminding him about it every time we met, and he assured me that he would finish before the expiration of 6 weeks.

Do you know what, it was during the sixth week, he started cutting the material and ended up disappointing me.

What was your reaction and how did you manage?

He could see that I was visibly angry when I went to his shop to pick it up. I refused saying anything because it would not solve the problem at hand. Quarrelling with him would be a waste of my time and energy. I had to put on another cloth for that occasion though.

The worst part was that, I have paid him all the money for making the cloth so I was not expecting any disappointment.

I did not ask of it anymore. He finished it and brought it to me. I have seen where a tailor was arrested for his inability to deliver at the agreed time with his customer. The customer was seriously aggrieved that he reported him to the police and said he was no more interested in the clothes, rather that the tailor should buy the same material for him and give him back the money he has paid for the services.

I did not want to resolve it in this way, rather my own way of resolution is that, I would not go to him again for such service.

Presently, I find it difficult to buy materials and take it to a tailor for sewing just to avoid having issues with them. So I resort to already made clothes.

I have also had some tailors that always keep to their commitment and promises. One was a father and elderly man, who sewed my wedding suit. He gave me a time to come and a day before the agreed date, he reminded me of it and that my suit was ready. I got there, picked up my suit, paid the balance of his services remaining and left. I was so happy for such prompt service.

Presently, I use a tailor who was my Neighbour, in the previous place that I lived. That is in another state. He already has my measurements and is updated on current styles and designs. His name is Mokwe. If I need to sew, I will just put a call to him, tell him what I want and the rest is done. Most times, he buys the fabric needed. He has an eye for something good. His bills are also modest. He also keeps to his timing. He rarely disappoints his customers.

I recommend him to anyone who is looking for a reliable tailor to make use of. He is good with suits; both English and Native, trousers and shirts. He is well mannered and never raises his voice on his customers. He manages his customers well.

His services are also for people living outside my country. If you feel like getting some of our native suits, you can liaise with me so that I can give you his contact. He is always ready to attend to your request.
