- Growing up in my country Nigeria, I often heard different sayings from elders that seemed just ordinary then, but as I matured each year, I discovered their very depth and truth. These sayings remain my guiding lights, shaping well how I understand life and its realities.
What is that/those Proverbs or adages you believe to be true and how did you get to hear or know about it?
One of the proverb I deeply believe in is: “What an elder sees sitting down, a child cannot see even while standing.” At first, I heard this from my grandmother, who often used it each time I tried questioning her cautious way of doing things. At most time, I did not fully grasp well the meaning, but life has since revealed its depth to me now.
Why i believe this saying is true?
Experience has helped proven that wisdom does not always come with the strength or youthful zeal but often with time, reflection, and years of learning. There was this moments when I thought I had the best plan already to fix my business, only to be corrected by the advice of an elder who sees beyond i do. Later, I realized that his foresight really saved me from mistakes I might have walked into blindly. Truly, wisdom only comes with age, and this very proverb captures that timeless truth for me.
Do you know of or have any experience that confirms this proverb or adage.
- I can vividly remember my secondary school days, I once ignored adamantly my father’s advice on choosing my friends. He warned me about a group I do admired, saying their path would eventually distract me from my studies. I worried and thought he was perhaps simply being too cautious with me. Months later, I witnessed myself that those friends had been expelled for misconduct. It was my memory rewind to my father's saying and felt the weight of its truth. The Elders often sees beyond what youthful eyes can truly grasp.
