Sigiriya Lion Rock, amazing place to visit

in Steem Sri Lanka22 days ago (edited)

As I previously mentioned, Sri Lanka has many historical and attractive places to visit. Today with this article I am asking you to come with me to explore the ancient rock fortress called Sigiriya.

I'll start by briefly introducing you to the Sigiriya Lion Rock. It is an old rock fortress that is around 200 meters high. It was constructed by King Kasyapa and is a World Heritage Site. It has both archaeological and historical value. Every year, a large number of visitors from around the globe come to this location.

Significance of the Sirigirya

The legend said that this fortress was built by King Kasyapa to hide from his brother Moggallana, who is the rightful heir to the throne. The palace was built as a fortress on the top of the rock; therefore, he is able to see any enemy approaching the fortress from very far away and get ready for any war before they reach the kingdom. Now only ruins of the place can be seen.

Ruins of the palace at the top of the rock

As you can see from the pictures I've included, the fortress was filled with expansive gardens, ponds, canals, and fountains. It is also regarded as the best example of ancient urban planning.

One of the most significant parts of the palace that is still there is the entry, which is through the lion's paws. Tourists relax here after climbing half of the palace.

Sigiriya graffiti, Lion’s paw entrance, a Boulders Garden, a Mirror wall, Fresco paintings of female figures, Water gardens, Moats, Ramparts, and the remains of the palace are the important attractions in Sigiriya Rock.

These Sigiriya fresco paintings are said to be very comparable to Indian Ajantha paintings. According to legend, the Sigiriya Graffiti in the Mirror Wall consists of over 1800 pieces of prose, poetry, and commentary written by ancient tourists. It is also said that most of that graffiti refers to the beautiful paintings of the semi-nude females of the Sigiriya Frescoes.

The lovely surroundings enhance the beauty of this location. The photos I am sharing here will amaze you with the beautiful surroundings of that wonderful place.

The Route

Sigiriya Lion Rock is situated near the Dambulla City, which is in the Matale District of Central Province. Sigiriya is 166 km away from Colombo. The easiest way to visit Sigiriya from Colombo is by train, which takes about three and a half hours. But, if you wish to visit by bus, it takes only two and a half hours.
