Tech Blog #223 | Vivo X Fold5 : Durability Mastered..
Foldable smartphones is a thing now. There are flipping smartphones and folding smartphones. I think folding smartphones are practical as it packs a tab sized device on a normal bar #smartphone profile. But the biggest challenges foldable smartphones face are durability and dimensions. Companies are pushing limits and let's see how far #Vivo has pushed.
Vivo X Fold5 is the newest addition of their foldable lineup. And vivo is claiming to solve the main challenges from this device. It's a long way to go but this is a great example for other brands.
Water resistance is a huge challenge when it comes to foldable smartphones due to its hinge mechanism. But vivo somehow was able to break the barriers by certifying IPX8, IPX9+ and IP5X which are certifications for protection against water submersion, water jets and dusts. The foldables before reached the highest certification of IP5X and now other brands have a big hurdle to jump.
The vivo Fold X5 has a 6.53” cover display and a 8.03” inner display. While keeping those both displays its thickness measures 9.2mm folded and 4.3mm unfolded. And it's only 219g in weight. I think an Apple 16 Pro Max weighs more than that. The light weight was achieved by using carbon fiber on the hinge.
The vivo Fold X5 packs last years Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, probably to leave the current flagship processor for the Pro version. But it doesn't disappoint from other hardware components like LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.1 storage.
In the back, The vivo Fold X5 features triple 50MP setup: a main, a 3x periscope telephoto and an ultrawide. The lenses are applied with Zeiss T* coating to maximize optical output. It also packs two 20MP cameras: one in the cover display and one in the inner display ensuring selfie experience in every direction.
Thanks to Si/C technology, The vivo Fold X5 packs a 6000mAh battery which consists of dual cell system ensuring fast charging abilities upto 80W wired. And it's the highest battery capacity on a foldable smartphone to date. Vivo has also found space to stuff a coil to wirelessly charge the device in 40W rate.
The vivo Fold X5 comes with Android 15 on top of OriginOS 5. And it's only released in China region. Since The vivo Fold X3 series got a international release, this for sure should get a one. And then it impact in the biggest stand for those who are on blindfolds.
